Hi Folks,

This is the 8th year I've had the joy of participating in the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash. If you haven't attended yet let me mention the audience looks to be having a wonderful time. Everyone is singing along, and to some songs, practically dancing in their seats. You'll hear many of your favorite Guthrie songs and probably be suprised by a few lesser known but exciting tunes.

Don't let this terrific night pass you by.

Hello to those who have come many times before.
Look forward to seeing you there!

Jessica

This year we are dedicating our program to dear Eric Levine, our courageous and talented friend who died in May. Eric was on the roster for this year's Woody Guthrie concert, as he participated in it each year. We will be remebering Woody and Eric with wonderful songs and hope you will join us to sing along and have fun. It is an enjoyable evening for all, and very affordable, at the Bowery Poetry Club, right across the street from old CBGB's.

Click here for link to Eric Levine tribute page.

Eric had performed in all seven previous editions of the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash. He will be there again on July 13 in spirit and in song. Please be there with him.

I'm looking forward to working with Emma Graves this time. And Sandy Pliskin. It will feel strange not having Eric there, but we will, of course, be thinking of him

Greetings:

Thanks for mentioning the www.woodyguthrie.org website. It's the official website of the Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives, and although they are not officially a sponsor of the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash, they have given us encouragement and support. For example, it was through the WGF&A that we became acquainted with Hillel Arnold, their former assistant archivist. Hillel is a wonderfully talented singer and guitarist. He appeared as a special guest artist when we last performed at CB' 313 Gallery in 2006, ad he became a regular when we moved across the street to the Bowery Poetry Club last year. We are happy to say he is with us again this time around.

Hillel participated in creating the new Live Wire recording, a live performance Woody did in 1949 in Newark New Jersey, restored and remasterd from a wire recording. Woody's wife Marjorie introduces the songs and you get a good idea of their relationship and how Woody related to an audience. It comes with a hardcover book which includes photos and background information. It won an Grammie for best historical album, which was well deserved.

Thanks for posting info on Live Wire recording, Anne.

It's getting close to Sunday, July 13th. If you're a Mudcatter from out of town or in town I'd love to meet you. Please say, "hello."
We'd all like to meet you!

Greetings to our New York brethren and sistern from Okemah, Oklahoma where we commenced the celebrating on Thursday. We're having a fine time and hope that you have as much fun at Woody's Birthday Bash VIII. Reckon how many votes we'd need to get Woody's birthday declared a national holiday? I figure it couldn't be too hard seeing as how all the children are out of school anyway.

I thought July 14th already is a national holiday.

IT'S WOODY'S BIRTHDAY!
Tune: Ten Little Indians (traditional)
Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 2001

I'm taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
You're taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
We're taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
We'll be back to work tomorrow!

I'm taking off, it's Bastille Day,
Vive la France, it's Bastille Day,
Storm the walls, it's Bastille Day,
And it's also Woody's Birthday!

We need a day off, we're folksingers,
Banjo pickers and rafter ringers,
Guitar pickers and real humdingers,
Besides it's Woody's Birthday!

We'll sing for Pete and Leadbelly,
Of Jesse James and Ned Kelley,
Of Barnacle Bill and Little Nellie,
Hey, it's Woody's Birthday!

I'm taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
You're taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
We're taking off, it's Woody's Birthday,
We'll be back to work tomorrow!
[Spoken: If we still have jobs!]

This song has been published in Sing Out! Jeremy Butler recorded it and he plays it each year on his show on Alabama Public Radio.

Well, that certainly explains why all the children are out of school on 14 July. Glad we've got that cleared up. There's one more event here in Okemah, a hoot to raise money for Huntington's research Sunday at noon. Picked up a copy of Live Wire while I was here.
