Welcome to the Mudcat Pam!

The second song you mention is probably the one called "Crawdad". I found it in the DT, the DigiTrad Database. You could go to the upper-right-hand corner of this page and see the search engine niftily entitled "Search the DigiTrad Database". I typed in [you get a line] and clicked on the Search button and found The Crawdad. The brackets [ ] tell the search engine to look for the complete phrase.

Stick around, someone else may answer your first question. While you're waiting, you might want to go back to the thread list and browse a spell. We think we have a pleasant little cybercommunity and we welcome new members.

Enjoy the song.

I believe I've heard "Crawdad" done as a cadence. (marching song)

It's too bad nobody's collecting cadences these days. (that I know of.) Unfortunately, it would require getting on to an Army installation, and getting up at what is euphemistically referred to a "oh-dark-thirty." Oh yeah - and running along behind them carrying a tape recorder.

My mom used to sing "Don't bring Lulu" too. If memory serves it goes, "You can bring pearl she's a darn nice girl but don't bring Lulu. You can bring 'pet she's the best girl yet but don't bring Lulu. Lulu is a smarty who breaks up every party. Lulu always wants to do what us boy's don't want to do. Hulabaloo-loo don't bring Lulu. She'll come by herself".

DON'T BRING LULU
Words by Billy Rose and Lew Brown, music by Ray Henderson, ©1925.
As recorded by Billy Murray, 1925. (Play at Internet Archive.)

1. "Your presence is requested," wrote little Johnny White,
"But with this invitation, there is a stipulation.
When you attend this party, you'll all be treated right,
But there's a wild and woolly woman you boys can't invite.

CHORUS 1: "You can bring Pearl, she's a darn nice girl, but don't bring Lulu.
You can bring Rose, with the turned up nose, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu always wants to do, what the folks don't want her to.
When she struts her stuff around, London Bridge is falling down.
You can bring cake or a porterhouse steak, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu gets blue and goes cuckoo, like the clock upon the shelf.
She's the kind of smarty, breaks up every party.
Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu; I'll bring her myself.

2. Last week we had a party, a real high-toned affair,
And then along came Lulu, wild as any Zulu.
She started in to Charleston, and how the boys did stare!
But when she did the hula-hula, then she got the air.

CHORUS 2: You can bring Flo; her dad's got dough, but don't bring Lulu.
You can bring Lil; she's an awful pill, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu has the reddest hair, auburn here and henna there.
How can we boys keep our heads? Bulls go wild when they see red.
You can bring peas and crullers and cheese, but don't bring Lulu.
When she gets sore and slams the door, the plates fly off the shelf.
She can make a fella wild on sarsaparilla.
Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu; she'll come here herself.

You can bring ham and crackers and jam, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu goes wild and when she's wild, she climbs up on the shelf.
She can make the pastor be a dancing master.
Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu; I'll bring her myself.

This is an odd coincidence! I just discovered that old '78 the last time I visited my mom. I didn't know anything about it except that I liked it. I didn't imagine that anyone else ever even heard of it. Thanks, Frank, for posting the lyrics. And thanks, Pam, for dusting off this old song!

You can hear this recording at YouTube.

As they often do, Jones & Hare change the lyrics a lot, and convert the song to a dialogue.

DON'T BRING LULU
As sung by the Happiness Boys (Billy Jones & Ernest Hare), 1925.

[BJ:] Won't you attend a party down at my house tonight?
[EH:] Is that an invitation without a stipulation?
[BJ:] There's just one stipulation. [EH:] Ha-ha! I thought I had you right!
[BJ:] I draw the line on just one woman. [EH:] Who can I invite?

[BJ:] You can bring Pearl; she's a darn nice girl, but don't bring Lulu.
[EH:] Can I bring Nan? [BJ:] Bet your life you can, but don't bring Lulu.
[EH:] Lulu has the kind of smile that makes fellows walk a mile,
[BJ:] And when she struts her stuff around, London Bridge is fallin' down!
[EH:] If I bring cake and porterhouse steak, can I bring Lulu?
[BJ:] Lulu gets blue and she goes cuckoo like the clock upon the shelf.
[EH:] She the kind of smarty who breaks up ev'ry party.
[BJ:] Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu. I'll bring her myself.

[BJ:] We both went to a party, a real high-toned affair,
[EH:] And then along came Lulu, as wild as any Zulu.
[BJ:] She started in to Charleston, and how the boys did stare!
[EH:] But when she did the hula-hoo, [BOTH:] then she got the air.

[BJ:] You can bring Peg with the wooden leg, but don't bring Lulu.
[EH:] Can I bring Vi with the old glass eye? [BJ:] But don't bring Lulu.
Lulu eats just like a horse: sauerkraut and garlic sauce.
[EH:] I smelled onions on her breath, and I cried myself to death.
Can I bring Ruth with the rubber tooth? [BJ:] But don't bring Lulu.
Lulu's okay, but when she gets gay, you should see the cops arrive.
[EH:] When she starts in singing, police clubs start in swinging.
[BOTH:] Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu, not while she's alive.

[BOTH:] You can bring Sold(?) 'cause her pa's got gold, but don't bring Lulu.
You can bring Min and her double chin, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu thinks she's doing fine when she sings "Sweet Adeline."
Oh, but when she hits high C, she drives out the family.
You can bring sweets and pickled pigs feet, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu goes bugs and she chews up rugs, but she yells, "Ain't this the life!"
[BJ:] She's the kind starts yawning, [EH:] "We won't go home till morning."
[BOTH:] Hullabaloo-loo! Don't bring Lulu. She might know the wife.

[SPOKEN:]
[EH:] Ha-ha-ha! Say, Bill, I don't see why I can't bring Lulu. She's a nice girl. And say, Bill, would you call Lulu a flapper?
[BJ:] Sure, but I've got a new name for flappers.
[EH:] What is it, Bill?
[BJ:] Well, I call them bungalows.
[EH:] Bungalows? Why do you call 'em bungalows?
[BJ:] Well, because they're shingled in back, painted in front, and they have no attic.
[BOTH:] Ha-ha-ha-ha!

[SUNG:]
[BOTH:] You can bring Claire with her "I don't care", but don't bring Lulu.
You can bring Lil; she's an awful pill, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu has the sweetest smile. She starts laughing all the while.
[EH:] When she looks at half(?) her best, [BJ:] one eye looks east [EH:] and the other looks west.
[BOTH:] You can tripe, provided it's ripe, but don't bring Lulu.
Lulu makes noise when she ...(?) the boys, and we're sure to get in Dutch.
[BJ:] She's the kind that teases, [EH:] and then does what she pleases.
[BOTH:] Hullabaloo-loo, don't bring Lulu. She talks too darn much!

Here's a repost of Genie's message, properly with HTML character references instead of raw UTF-8; see this thread: Entering special characters. BTW, the wonky sequence corresponds to character U+2028: Line Separator (though it's unneeded here). If I recall, this was included on the Andrews' album Songs of the Roaring 20's, a big favorite of mine as a kid. Also has classics like "Collegiate", "Barney Google" and "Japanese Sandman". But back to Genie's message...

IIRC around 1960 there was a TV series called "The Roaring Twenties" which featured Dorothy Provine. She had a chart success in Britain with "Don't Bring Lulu" at about that time.
