The Refugees in Fair Lawn - June 7

This Saturday June 7 at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will feature The Refugees. The Refugees are a new band that features critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters Wendy Waldman, Cindy Bullens and Deborah Holland.

Noted for their vocal harmonies, each artist will perform their individual songs accompanied by the other two on guitars, bass, melodica, keyboards, percussion, mandolin, and harmonica, culminating in the creation of new renditions of their work.

Wendy Waldman has a distinguished career as an artist (solo on major labels and cult fave Bryndle), and was one of the first woman record producers to have a major impact. Waldman is a songwriter of multi-platinum songs in genres from country to pop, film, jazz, children's music and R&B and includes the Grammy-winning "Save the Best for Last," (recorded by Vanessa Williams). Her first album, Love Has Got Me, on Warner Bros. Records, was proclaimed by Rolling Stone Magazine to be the "singer-songwriter debut of the year."

Cindy Bullens began her career performing in Elton John's band and scored a breakthrough hit with her song "Survivor," earning a Grammy nomination for best rock vocal performance. Her songs have been recorded by the Dixie Chicks, Radney Foster, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Irma Thomas and more.

Deborah Holland gained national attention performing as member of the trio Animal Logic (with Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke). She has gone on to have a successful career as a solo artist releasing 4 CDs; the newest one entitled Bad Girl Once. Deborah scores music and writes songs for film and television and is a full-time professor of music at California State University at Los Angeles.

Opening the evening will be singer-songwriter Annie Dinerman. Annie Dinerman is an award-winning singer-songwriter whose lyrics reveal a frank, funny and very female point of view. Recently she was a finalist in Music To Life Songwriting Contest and featured on compilation CD of songs from the competition produced by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary Fame. Childhood hours spent lying on the living room rug, poring over traditional folksong books, prompted Annie to walk in the footsteps of storytelling artists like Paul Simon and Wendy Waldman. There are over 30 covers of Annie Dinerman's songs, including "Child In Me Again", recorded by Kathie Gifford on her "Born For You" CD.

The Fair Lawn Community Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ.

Tickets for this concert are only $25 ($23 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert. Additional information can be received at the website or by calling the Hurdy Gurdy Hotline at (201) 384-1325.

Wendy Waldman , along with Carol Elliot wrote a beautiful cowboy christmas song called Corn, Water, Wood.

Cindy Bullens has a beautiful "album" dedicated to her daughter who was a cancer victim. Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth.

There was a typo in the original message. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $22 for Hurdy Gurdy members. Our membership is $15 for a single membership and $21 for a duel membership. Members get discounts on each of our concerts (normally $3 off) and we have members only events. This summer our members will be enjoying a private sail on the Clearwater.   Members also receive a monthly newsletter. If you are in the area and are interested, please visit our official website - www.hurdygurdyfolk.org

The Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club has been in operation since 1981 and we are Bergen County's longest running folk/acoustic concert series.

I hope you mean dual membership!
"duel membership" is a completely different thing...
you may end up with only one at the end!

I just found out, the Record, the largest daily newspaper in North Jersey, had included this concert in their weekly "5 hottest events in NJ" for this coming weekend.

Tickets are still available! I'm really looking forward to seeing them - our theater is an intimate 171 seats and this should be a fantastic concert in such a cozy room!   Yes, it is air conditioned!!

When I lived (for 20-odd years) in Glen Rock, a neighboring town, the coolest gag anyone came up with was a T-shirt emblazoned with:
FAIRLAWN NJ IS A TOURIST TRAP!
I'm glad there's finally someting for tourists to attend.
