ClaireBear, a good thing you knew the song or where to look.
Thanks for linking the lyrics- an intriguing song, new to me.

allmusic.com lists 154 recordings with the name "Margarita," and many copyright holders, so several songs have that name, but nothing under Andrews.

There are over 100 other recordings of songs that have 'Margarita' as part of the title.

Q -- Thanks! I didn't know the song -- just got lucky searching on "they're playing our song, Margarita" using Clusty. It's extremely rare that I am first with lyrics in these hallowed cyberhalls of song knowledge! It was fun.

Or even better, buy the CD and learn it from there. I'm sure Harvey would appreciate a few coppers in the old man's hat.

I have pmed H.

Buy the CD? Well, yes I could, but if I had to buy a CD for every song track that I wanted the lyrics off I would need a second mortgage. I would happily buy a track from itunes but it is not listed.

Lyrics of MARGARITA have been posted in the thread Songs about World War I.

You can also see a video of Harvey Andrews performing it at YouTube.

"Buy the CD? Well, yes I could, but if I had to buy a CD for every song track that I wanted the lyrics off I would need a second mortgage"

And how, pray, do you think the composers pay their mortgages? They're professional musicians, they earn their living from their songs. Why rob them of part of their living so that you can have songs for nothing?

Sorry to preach, nothing personal, but it is something I have a bee in my bonnet about.

OK lets get this straight. I need/want the lyrics for a song - quite a normal request on here. I am willing to buy the track from itunes etc but it is not avaliable. I do not want to buy the CD as I cannot afford to buy a cd everytime I want lyrics to a track. I happen to have three HA CDs but this song is not on any of them. I have made a perfectly reasonable request to find if they have been posted anywhere - it appears, up to now anyway, that they havent.

Many songwriters - Richard tHompson, Dick Gaugahn etc are quite happy to publish lyrics on their websites. It appears that HA isnt - OK his choice.

I could, of course borrow a CD and copy the words from that and who knows, perhaps make a copy of it whilst I am at it!

Just for your information matey, I neither lend or borrow cds, for this very reason. Not publishing lyrics does encourage this form of theft though.

Harvey seems to have no objection to his songs being posted here. He has always been very gracious and generous. The song was posted by an unnamed guest, but I have a strong (and enlightened) suspicion it was posted by Harvey himself.

-Joe-
The song may get lost in the thread where it was posted, so I'll include it here:

MARGARITA
By Harvey Andrews

They're playing our song, Margarita.
Dance it this last time with me.
It won't be long, Margarita.
Soon I'll be overseas.
Let me know that you'll care,
When I've gone over there.
They're playing our song, Margarita.
Dance it this last time with me.

Kiss me again, Margarita.
Give me a memory of you.
They say in France, Margarita,
One more push, we'll be through.
Yes, I'll write, but where from?
All they'll say is 'the Somme'.
So kiss me again, Margarita.
Give me a memory of you.

It's a new world, Margarita.
We'll build when it's through.
In that new world, Margarita,
We'll be wed, me and you.

My old great aunt, Margarita,
She'd been blind thirty years,
Would tell me of young Margarita,
Of her man and her tears.
She would say, "He was tall.
There's his picture on the wall."
My old great aunt, Margarita,
She'd been blind thirty years.

She would ask, "Is he smiling?"
I would stare at the frame,
But the sun was there, shining
Through her window again.
Where that sun always shone,
He had faded and gone,
But she would ask, "Is he smiling?"
I would say, "He's the same."

It's a new world, Margarita.
We'll build when it's through.
In that new world, Margarita,
We'll be wed, me and you.

They're playing our song, Margarita.
Dance it this last time with me.
It won't be long, Margarita.
Soon I'll be overseas.
Let me know that you'll care,
When I've gone over there.
They're playing our song, Margarita.
Dance it this last time with me.

"Harvey seems to have no objection to his songs being posted here. He has always been very gracious and generous."

Indeed he is, Joe - in bucketloads. Which is why I like the idea of users of his material AT LEAST paying for a CD, as a small token of appreciation for his graciousness and generosity. And not just Harvey, anyone who provides us non-writers with songs to perform deserves the same consideration.

As I said, nothing personal (no need for the anger, Guest Silas), just MHO.

Not angry just fed up with supercilious postings from people who seem to think it is their god given right to police perfectly legitimate enquiries.

I am 'guest' because I am not using my home machine - no other reason. Silas in my normal log in name - if you bothered to read the posts you would know that.

Get the boxing gloves out of the cupboard!

Just ducking the blows though, if I was to buy a Harvey Andrews CD, which one would you recommend I buy as a taster? Perhaps one I can try and learn a couple of songs from to sing in the pub. My guitar play is still in the infancy stage, you could say, or at least you would think so to listen to me!

Thanks

Lyrics to hundreds, maybe thousands, of songs have been posted in this forum, a large number of them by me, in response to requests by hundreds of people. I see no reason to harass this particular requestor, or clutter up this thread in particular with this type of argument. If you have a philosophical objection to requesting and posting lyrics in general, I suggest you discuss that issue in a separate thread.

Hi Chalkie

They are all good so pick any!
The guitar accomaniment is usually fairly easy to work out, its the lyrics that make Harveys songs!

From my own experience, Harvey is one of the most approachable people on the folk scene, he is normally more than happy for people to sing his songs, as he says himself " a song not sung is a dead song". However Silas if you like one of his songs on a CD you may well find several others that you want to cover so the purchse of a CD could well be a superb investment in new material for you

Cheers

Raggy

Hi Raggytash
I agree, however, as I said before, I really can't afford to buy every CD that I would want ( i just wish....)

I agree with what you say about Harvey, he used to live in the next Village to me and would organise a concert in the village hall every year - great bloke.

"Not angry just fed up with supercilious postings from people who seem to think it is their god given right to police perfectly legitimate enquiries"

Not intending to be supercilious, Silas. Simply looking at it from a different viewpoint. Nor policing - simply expressing an opinion (which is perfectly within my rights as a member), to which you've made it more than clear that your impoverished condition makes it impossible to accede. I understand. Ten-Four Good Buddy.

"I see no reason to harass this particular requestor, or clutter up this thread in particular with this type of argument"

Jim, not harrassing, nor cluttering, just expessing my opinion, as I said earlier. Silas is entitled to his, you're entitled to yours, I'm entitled to mine. Isn't discussion an exchange of differing opinions? And FWIW, it wasn't me who spat his dummy out, and started up with the "Now look here mate..." stuff.

Anyhoo, we don't agree (except about Harvey being a fine and generous chap, which we DO seem to agree on) so end of story AFAIC. I'm off to do more important things, got a few CDs to buy. :-) :-)
Roger and Out.
