07 Jun 08 - 08:00 AM (#2359990) Subject: Lyr Req: A Song about a boy named Paul From: Piers Plowman I've asked elsewhere but nobody knew it, and a search through the internet didn't turn up anything, either. It's a song that was played on the "Midnight Special" radio program. It's a male singer accompanied on the guitar and the only words I remember are "When Paul was only six years old". It's British and about a child who is treated badly by his parents. The humor comes from them treating him in a way which would be appropriate for an adult but cruel when applied to a child. For instance, when he tries to nurse, his mother pushes him away saying "cheeky beggar" or something similar. Does this ring any bells for anyone? |

I looked up Jeremy Taylor and it seems he's still around, with a website and everything! The recording I heard was probably from the album of Jeremy Taylor and Spike Milligan from 1973. "The Midnight Special" played a lot of things in this vein that I probably would never have heard otherwise, including Sam Hinton singing "It's A Long Way From Amphioxus". |

"Oh, sod it", Ethel shouted, "oh, sod the kid!" Also, I seem to remember line 2 of verse 5 above being instead: "....like chitlins tied with a piece of string...." |
