SATURDAY 12 JULY from 10am, book & other stalls in the School 12-2: Lunch at Blue Bell, Exeter Arms or Village Hall. If this festival is anything like as good as the book it will be worth going to. I'd love to come but too far from deepest Cornwall to drive up after school on Friday and get back Sunday night. For me it's an event that I wouldn't want to miss. In the past it's had a bit of an 'Eng. Lit. Crit.' feel about it (which is OK as Clare was/is an important literary figure). But in the last couple of years it seems to have broadened out a bit to embrace more aspects of Clare's life and interests. Last year the Society's new Patron, Richard Mabey (perhaps our finest living natural history writer - go out and buy and read all of his books immediately!) talked about Clare's interest in wild flowers. This year the focus is to be on Clare and Folk Music - see Pete Shaw's post above. Since the members of the Society have managed to acquire Clare's cottage (and have exciting plans for it), and a local group called 'The Langdyke Trust' have managed, among other things, to set up at least one nature reserve near the village, Helpstone looks set to be an important centre for anyone interested in English rural life - its history, lore (including Folk Song) and wildlife. |

It brought out aspects of the way the poems work, and can work, with music with the kind of insight and sympathy that can only come from someone who's really absorbed both--vastly more illuminating than many a non-musical poetry lecture... |

There is a page somewhere, kept by the John Clare Society I think, listing the settings they know about. If interested, ask the Secretary of the JCS, Linda Curry. http://www.johnclare.org.uk/ I'm sure that the JCS will be inviting Gordon Tyrrell some time. Vicki Clayton has appeared at the festival in the past and it is the turn of Dave Townsend & the Mellstock Band this year. The Festival is a very laid back, gentle day. |
