From: Dave Hunt We will be in Ontario for a couple of weeks in August - a few days in Toronto, then a couple of days in Niagara Falls, then a week or so in Bancroft. Any information on folk clubs/sessions etc would be welcome. (I am not planning on taking my melodeon so song things would be best, although I might change my mind if there are any appropriate music sessions!)Thanks Dave Hunt |

Thw weekend after is Goderich Celtic Festival another good one but not free. I will be at both, also the Celtic College the week between the two. Also the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals has a more complete listing. Free stuff, sometimes Folk related at Harbourfront in Toronto. Not much in the lines of Folk Clubs during the summer. Have a great time here in Canada. I'm sure I will have a great time in the UK in July when I am over there with Orange Peel Morris JohnB |

If you ever meet a Scottish guy called Alistair Brown, he spent a lot of time in London Ont (ran Folk Clubs etc.) before moving back to England a couple of years ago, he may know him. JohnB |

Don't remember a Mike Pooley by name ... but memories fade. Alistair is down Cornwall way now, I hear. I too would be interesting in knowing anything that happens in Ont, particularly in the Niagara Pennisula - stomping ground of my childhood. sian |

Marion is an absolute sweetie, in addition to being a great songwriter and singer. There are a number of others, that I would guess that she can hook you up with. From: Marion Based on Dave's PM, I looked for things to do on a Thursday, and found: sessions: - an Irish session at Dora Keogh, which is a pub in Eastern Toronto, accessible by subway. - concerts: Free Times Cafe, which is downtown, will probably have a show on but they don't have their schedule posted that far in advance. Hugh's Room, which is a restaurant/folk concert venue in western Toronto (accessible by subway) has a show that night by Andy Irvine, who I'm not familiar with. The Tranzac may have something but right now there's nothing up on their schedule for that day; none of their ongoing participatory events are on Thursday. - open stage: Renaissance Cafe, which is in Eastern Toronto and reachable by subway. It looks like they haven't updated their website for a year but I think this is still going on. Let me know if you're considering this option and I'll confirm it. Don't expect there to be much in the way of traditional or tradition-based music, though. I still think coming over to my place for supper and singing is your best bet... Marion |

We were joined by some local Mudcatters (Balladeer and Paul Mills), Jed Marum who is in town to do some recording, another gentleman from the Toronto Song Circle, and a couple of my friends. It was a very fun evening of sharing songs - the melodeon didn't make it across the ocean, but Dave and Maggie are both fine unaccompanied singers. We got sneak previews of Jed's new album and of Joanne and Paul's new album. They're off to Niagara Falls today. Marion |

From: black walnut Off the initial question, but staying on topic with the title of this thread -I would suggest that anyone interested in Folk Music in Ontario check out the annual Woods Music and Dance Camp which takes place each August on the astonishingly beautiful Lake Rosseau. It's a small intimate camp - about 80 people in all including performers and organizers....but everyone is top notch, and it's so much fun. The Woods Music and Dance Camp website ~b.w. |
