Lyr Req: If I had the wings of an angel...

I am looking for the words to a song that keeps repeating the same sentence in my mind. The only one I can remember.

If I had the wings of an angel- over these prison walls I would fly- I'd fly to the arms of my darling and there's where I'd stay 'till I die

Can anyone remember this song and perhaps let me know. Thanks, Carolyn crchenry@sprynet.com

Search the DT database for Prisoner* and you'll get a bunch of songs including The Prisoner's Song. Thanks for the reminder -- my mother used to sing this, and I've been wanting to look up the words. - Rita Ferrara

There's an alternate version of the first verse, with the third line changed as follows:

Oh I wish I had someone to love me
Someone to call me her own,
Someone to sleep with me nightly,
For I'm tired of living alone.

If memory serves, I believe that the Prison Song, was the first million dollar recording.

I guess i picked this up a little late, but i love this song and I've never known the proper title. My grandmother sang it to me often and I remembered most of the words, but wanted to know all the lyrics. This site and the forum have been very helpful.

Go to www.roughstock.com/cowpie/songs to find lyrics and chords. It's filed there under Vernon Dalhart.

I have searched for this old song too, and never found it ('til now). Thanks Big Daddy for the link. Here's the text:

THE PRISONER'S SONG^^^

[D] Oh, I wish I had someone to [G] love me
Some-[A7] one to call me their [D] own
Oh, I wish I had someone to [G] live with
'Cause I'm [A7] tired of livin' a-[D] lone.

Oh, please meet me tonight in the moonlight
Please meet me tonight all alone
For I have a sad story to tell you
It's a story that's never been told.

I'll be carried to the new jail tomorrow
Leavin' my poor darlin' alone
With the cold prison bars all around me
And my head on a pillow of stone.

Now I have a grand ship on the ocean
All mounted with silver and gold
And before my poor darlin' would suffer
Oh, that ship would be anchored and sold.

Now if I had wings like an angel
Over these prison walls I would fly
And I'd fly to the arms of my poor darlin'
And there I'd be willin' to die.^^^
