Tin / Penny Whistle technique

Does anyone know what the recommended use of the pinkie is viz. bring it into use only when needing to stabilize the whistle, or press on the shaft throughout a tune?

IF you can reach the bottom of the whistle with your pinkie , you can get a semitone below the 'normal' lowest note by partially closing the bore !
Other than that I personally dont use it at all !

If you can press it on your shaft while playing a tune.... calm down Burke.

I don't think they ever come into contact with the whistle when I'm playing it- the thumbs and mouth hold it adequately.

Except of course when I stretch down to get the C# below bottom D, but then I'm just showing off.

Sarah the Flute and Leadfingers or one of the other gifted whistle players here will probably be along to give you their opinions on this. I'm more of a beginner. I find it helpful to use the pinky to stabilize the whistle and reduce muscle tension in my hands.

I use my right pinkie for a bit of ocunterbalance when all or most all holes are open.

You can do it either way - do what works, especially at the higher speeds. I usually brace the whistle between mouth, and the other two pinkies. That helps when you need the 'all on-all off' jump. With Low whistles, I can't reach to the open hole below, so being well endowed, I improvise. :-)
