I don't think they ever come into contact with the whistle when I'm playing it- the thumbs and mouth hold it adequately. Except of course when I stretch down to get the C# below bottom D, but then I'm just showing off. |

I'm more of a beginner. I find it helpful to use the pinky to stabilize the whistle and reduce muscle tension in my hands. |

I usually brace the whistle between mouth, and the other two pinkies. That helps when you need the 'all on-all off' jump. With Low whistles, I can't reach to the open hole below, so being well endowed, I improvise. :-) |
