I saw an article about this a couple of days ago, and immediately saw what kind of humour was going to come out of it.

I know a whackin' large number of Newfoundlanders, and I've yet to hear one of them say 'doog' (Unless they were referring to 'out drinkin' with Doogie' or summat).

Is anyone at MacMaster from Newfoundland? Just sayin'...

Well, as long as she doesn't start talking like Shane.

The best is the one comment left on the story - apparently to at least one person this is proof of "past lives".

I've never heard of a past life memory being triggered by a stroke before. But then again, why not? ;-)

Offer her seal flipper pie and see how she responds; that'll sort out the past life stuff.

(Why is it that most people's past lives were so much more interesting than their present ones? They were all Egyptian princesses/handmaidens/priestesses or burned at the stake for their pagan beliefs or innocent Irish maidservants murdered by wealthy lovers.)

"Why is it that most people's past lives were so much more interesting than their present ones? They were all Egyptian princesses/handmaidens/priestesses or burned at the stake for their pagan beliefs or innocent Irish maidservants murdered by wealthy lovers."

That is a common misconception, Bee, which is endlessly repeated by skeptics....(rather as the phrase "little green men" is endlessly repeated by AFO skeptics, despite the fact that no AFO witness I've ever heard from claims to have seen little green men).

Regression therapy results and other serious investigations into the matter suggest that people's memories of past lives usually run the gamut of all possible types of lives, most of them pretty mundane and ordinary by the standards of the time. However, the most traumatic incidents in any of those lives tend to leave strong emotional impressions. Thus, if you ended a life by being burned at the stake or going down in a sinking ship or being murdered by your lover, for example, then it is likely to have certain lingering emotional influences in subsequent lives, because the strong emotions are still resonating in the subconcious. One is much more likely to focus on a single traumatic incident than on a succession of several hundred similar days of getting up in the morning and doing one's daily work, right? ;-) This is just as true in the context of one life as it is in the context of many.

Now, for example, I am afraid of deep water and I don't like being in it. I am afraid of cold water. I also don't like going out on the ocean or on any large body of water if I can help it. Can you guess why that might be?

The fact that I seem to have died a traumatic death on the ocean in a certain past life registers far stronger on me now than do the other thousands of days in that very ordinary life when things were quite normal and not too remarkable...

I have had no memories of past lives which suggest I was anyone famous or particularly rich...but I have had rather distinct memories of several past lives. In some I was male. In some I was female. Like other people, I got caught up in the great events of the times (wars, etc)...and some of those lives ended in a traumatic fashion while others ended more quietly.

How can they tell? From my point of view EVERYONE in Canada talks (and spells) funny.

Th efunniest aspect of this in my opinion is that the specialist have come up with the authoritative explanation. It's "foreign accent syndrome". Explains a lot.

I think, myself, I am suffering from "hostile attitude syndrome".

You're a remarkably gentle sort of hostile, then Amos.

Little Hawk, suffice to say I personally think regression therapists are good at eliciting dream imagery, and some are good at helping people manufacture false memories. You don't agree, I know, and likely think of me as a particularly hard-headed and dismissive person at times. Nevertheless, a dragonfly sat on my finger today while I was weeding the flower garden, there is the scent of white clover drifting everywhere, the Bridal Spiraea and my big old fashioned two-pinks peonies are blooming: all this fills me with enough marvel and mystery to content me for today, at least. ;-)

Bee... "doog"? Me neither. I didn't have time to read the article... just the headline and the first sentence.

CC... the "humour" (that IS how it's spelt, Rap) that first came to me was that a stroke could make an Uppity Canadian more friendly, smarter....

You may be right about that, Bee. I'm sure you are right in regards to some cases of regression therapy.

However, if reincarnation is a real phenomenon, (and you don't know that it isn't) then it would hardly be surprising that some form of focusing attention (with or without the assistance of another person) might elicit past life memories in some people.

You are assuming it's not a real phenomenon. That's nothing but an unproven assumption on your part, based on your own mental habits of a lifetime rather than on any specific evidence you've encountered, and you're welcome to hold that assumption as long as you want to. No one can prove you wrong. No one can prove me wrong.

My assumption is that it is a real phenomenon, based on direct personal experience, and I'm welcome to hold that assumption too, and there's not a danged thing either of us can do to change the other, is there? ;-) I appreciate the bit about the dragonfly. I enjoy those moments too.
