Tom Paley West Coast U.S. Autumn '08

Tom is planning a West Coast Tour in Sept. and Oct. 2008.
I would like to help him book some gigs then. He was one
of the original members of the New Lost City Ramblers and
I am hoping to find some places for him to play this fall.
*It would especially be great if he could play at the Old
Time music event or the Hardly Strictly Blue Grass event.

if any cats would have any ideas on venues or gigs,
please contact me at veraloe at gotsky dot com

thanks! Laurel

Arghhh!! I wish I had known about this several months ago, we would have been delighted to have been able to have Tom perform at the Berkeley Old TIme Music Convention. But we have been booked up for awhile now.

I have called Laurel and talked with her about this and made some suggestions about other possible Bay Area venues.

Incidentally, Tom is indeed in the New Lost City Ramblers film which Chris Strachwitz and Yasha Aginsky are making under the auspices of the nonprofit Arhoolie Foundation. Arrangements were made to film Tom playing and to do an interview, all of this taking place in London. Some of this music and interview is in the film, along with many archival photos from the 1950s and early 60s and recordings of the Paley-era NLCR.

The film started off as a student project, and in that stage of development, Tom was not in the film. We are glad to have been able to remedy that omission and we thank the Mudcatters who encouraged us to do so.

We also thank the Mudcatters who have helped us to find archival photos, posters, etc. We hope the film will be done by the end of the year.
Best,
Suzy Thompson

Tom will be playing a house concert at our place in Pine Grove, up in Amador County, California, on Sept.27th, 2008. Fiddle, banjo, guitar, ballads, blues, humorous songs, hoedowns, waltzes, and rags, award-winning Swedish fiddle, political polemic, rowdy reminiscences, and more. We're 2 1/2 hours from San Francisco, 45 minutes from Sacramento, 1 hour from Lake Tahoe. This is an amazing chance to hear Tom in a very small, intimate setting (my living room or, if the weather is as beautiful as it usually is that time of year, my backyard).

The weekend of the 26th/27th is also the Jug Band festival here in Sutter Creek (15 minute drive). So come enjoy the jug bands all day, join us for potluck dinner & Tom's concert, jam with the jugs all night, stay at one of the great b&b's nearby, lather, rinse, repeat.

Tom played here in '06, and he is a delight. Amazing musician, very, very funny (if you don't mind non-stop puns!), and full of fascinating stories. This is a man who played in a duo with Woody Guthrie, gave guitar lessons to Ry Cooder, was a major influence on Dylan, was one of the original New Lost City Ramblers, and has been a major influence on American music for over 50 years.

To reserve a seat, email masha at banjodancer.com.

Hi Laurel,

If Tom gets as far north as Seattle, let me know.
I might find a gig for him here, or if nothing else,
the Pacific Northwest Folklore Society
might give him a house concert.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

We just heard Tom at the Park Slope Old Time & Bluegrass Jamboree. He outshone the other (excellent) acts. He is just so masterful as a singer & instrumentalist.
If you have the chance to hire him, do so!

i wish that he could have been included in the old - time music fest.
in the east bay area (berkeley, ca) but he contacted me after the acts
had all been booked. i also wish he was in the s.f. free festival
hardly strictly bluegrass, but same problem, not enough time. Also it
would have been grand if he was in some of the New Lost City Ramblers
reunion festivities, concerts, films, etc. I try to keep the organizers of such events reminded of his presence, but since being in U.K. and Sweden so many years, they have lost track of him.

where it looks like there is room in his schedule...
please do what you can to make it happen...don't wait

use all the support we can offer!!

venues? presenters? your house for a concert?

go for it!

Tom's performance in Mountain View was a pleasure to attend.
He did quite a few swedish tunes, and invited me on stage to
share a tune on the nyckelharpa. He also got us all singing
along on quite a few of the songs he sang!

Tom will be on Dave (Gus) Garelick's Fiddlin' Zone show between
8-9:30 on Mon. Oct. 13 (pacific time)

KRCB is streaming, so you can tune in the radio show at

I hope we might get a review of his other concerts along the way...
he is a national (international) treasure!

This Cut and Paste (Sorry!) from the UKs fRoots forum posted by Vic Smith.

"During the interval of our gig last night, Ben Paley was telling me of an email telling of an incident that happened to his dad during his current tour of the USA.

Tom was going from one gig to another by Greyhound bus and at one of the scheduled stops, Tom decided to go to the loo and by the time he came out, the bus had gone and left him......

Well, he did get his instruments and cases back and he did get to the gig and all the band laughed at the story at the time, but today I have been thinking it over. Here is a man in his eighties undertaking a tour by public transport and carrying a banjo, a guitar, a fiddle, his pack of clothes and knowing Tom, probably his big camera case as well.

My already great admiration for the man grows apace."

I've always wondered what he's got in that camera case!!
But, as Vic says. What a Guy!
Say hello from me if you bump into him (on a bus somewhere!)

Well, Desert Dancer and I saw Tom at a Friday night house concert in Long Beach and had a great time. Met very nice folks and Tom was very enjoyable. He fiddled some nice Swedish polkas, along with Paul Johnson, which were fine.

We enjoyed his banjo playing along with his bungee cord banjo strap, very functional and available anywhere there is a high quality auto repair and parts shop available.

He had some trouble with his f's since he just lost a front tooth the night before...but, did well anyway...trooped on along..

He played for roughly two hours and we all enjoyed....

BTW, we did pick up his new CD "Dealing a New Hand" (from the same old deck) by his band The New Deal String Band with his son.

Has 22 tracks:

1) Hogeye; 2) Rain and Snow; 3) Didn't he Ramble; 4) Done Gone;
5) The Tenderfoot; 6) Chinquapin Medley....among the 22.

Pretty enjoyable...
