Across the Hills - Leon Rosselson
^^^
Across the hills black clouds are sweeping
Carry poison far and wide
And the grass has blackened underfoot
And the rose has withered and died

But the rose is still as red now and the grass is still as green
And it must have been a shadow in the distance you have seen
Yes it must have been a shadow you have seen

Can't you hear the children weeping
Can't you hear that mournful sound
No birds sing in the twisted trees
And the silent streets are round

I can hear the children laughing in the streets as they play
And you must have caught the dying of an echo far away
Yes it must have been an echo far away

Can't you see the white ash falling
From the hollow of the skies
And the blood runs red from the blackened walls
Where our ruined city lies

I can see the bright sun shining in the park on the stream
And you must have felt a shiver from the darkness of a dream
Yes it must have been the darkness of a dream

And it shall reap a hellish harvest
Make the desert of this land

But the rose is still as red now and the grass is still as green
Yes it must have been a shadow you have seen

(as sung by the Ian Campbell Folk Group)

There is a version on YouTube and assuming it's the right tune as I haven't heard it before it goes something like

Intro

D5 (played xx0235) and under that is a little tune on the
4th and 3rd strings that goes
D F# A A G F# G A | D F# A A G F# D

Verse 1
D5         C                  D5
Across the hills black clouds are sweeping
      C      G/B    D5
Carry poison far and wide
       D         C         D
And the grass has blackened underfoot
       D         C          D
And the rose has withered and died

Verse 2
D5 (plus similar to intro playing underneath)
But the rose is still as red now and the grass is still as green
                                                       C
And it must have been a shadow in the distance you have seen
       D                C             D5
Yes it must have been a shadow you have seen

And that's about it

The chords I posted are from the Ian Campbell Group song book ! They just show D Major , but the D5 would be an interesting variation

Youtube video from The Three City Four - played on guitar and banjo and my ears suggest D5 start and nearly all Ds and Cs. I may be deaf of course :)

I have this from a CND song leaflet 40 years ago. It's in Em & E, which reflects the tone of the two voices.

(Em)Across the (D)hills black clouds are (Em)sweeping
Carrying (D)poison far and (Em)wide
And the (Em)grass has (D)blackened (Em)underfoot
And the (Em)rose has (D)withered and (Em)died

(E)But the rose is still as red now and the grass is still as green
And it must have been a (B7)shadow in the (E)distance you have (A)seen
Yes it (E)must have been a (B7)shadow you have (E)seen. (Em)
