insluding the one in which thread builder says "Oh Shit.." when he realizes he did not say "step right UP" in the title!...(Max...where IS that experimental 'edit your own threads' program you had once?)

Thanks, BillD! Barbara you did one heck of a job. That is excellent. Is it ceramic? It almost looks cast? Congratulations!

That is one fantastic instrument, Spaw. Barbara, in addition to being a great human being, is a hell of an artist. You've gotta get a sound file of the beast on your site ASAP. --seed

Barbara,

What a wonderful job! Too bad there isn't a big market for Possum patooie ocarinas. You could make a fortune. Or maybe it could become the secret Mudcat instrument. Anyone you see butt blowin' a possum you will automatically know is a Mudcatter!

Oh! I couldn't find the slot for my quarter so I guess I just "stole" a peek.

That has to be the greatest opossum ocarinas I have ever seen ~ It looks more like a opossum than POGO and I am a great Pogo fan. Catspaw is a lucky guy.

Great work Barbara.

And I want to see another on this page of catspaw demonstrating the appropriate embouchure, right 'paw?
It is a medium fire clay possum (iron oxide in the clay gives it the color) with what my clay studio partner euphemistically calls "a room temperature glaze" and I call a liquid wax finish, sounds so much nicer than shoe polish, don't it?
Blessings, and thanks for all the compliments; you Mudcatters sure are an appreciative crew.

Impressive! Barbara you have true genius.

I've followed the possum messages with glee, but there's one thing I still don't know, even through I'm getting a good idea.

What's a possum?

Somebody please tell me!

Liz

Wonderful, Barbara....! I don't know if I fall into the "appreciative crew" description or as a banjo player I am just easily amused!(*BG*) I too would like to see AND hear our 'Spaw on the Possum. Thought just occured, if one were to play Irish music on it, would that make it an O'Possum?

Liz C,

Possum is the abbreviated American slang for the opossum. For information about the opossum CLICK HERE. For some pictures and even more information about the opossum CLICK HERE. For how we Mudcatters recently became interested in Possum, CLICK HERE.

Enjoy!

Roger

Thanks a lot.

I only joined mudcat to find out about songs and now I find myself looking in my encyclopaedia to find out American small furry animals! What happened?

Without a doubt that is possumbly the purtiest perforated pottery possum I ever laid eyes on. When does the mass production and sales begin? Does it come with its own pouch? It would be the perfect companion to my butt blown loon whistle

Does anyone know whether or how the Oz-tralian possum is related to the American possums?

Helen,

In my recent WWW research into possum-mania, I found an answer to your question. The Australian Possum is no relation to the North American Opossum (which is just called "possum" for short).

Who would have thought the Mudcat would make me an authority on the North American Opossum.

I WANT ONE!!!!!

Rich R. We need a picture of your loon please!

We used to have two pet possums. My daughter brought them home when they were orphans just over two inches long. We bottle fed them and raised them as pets. We couldn't release them as they got too familiar with our cats and dogs, and one of them was missing a hind leg. He didn't know that this leg was missing so he used to try to scratch with the stump.

They have very soft, if somewhat thin, fur. Their mouths are huge in proportion to their bodies and they have very sharp teeth. They were very tame and didn't bite. We fed them on cat food and scraps, they will eat just about anything and they loved hot dogs. As well fed pets, they got a bit heavy and lost the ability to hang by their tails. They were litter box trained, but we used to keep them in a large cage because they'd take off and hide and we would have to find them.
They lived for over four years. In the wild their normal lifespan is about 18 months.

Bert.

That possum sure is a beauty! I'm sorry I missed the radio debut! We definitely need a demo photo of Catspaw and his possum!
