BS: Half the British army want to quit

Hard to believe but half of British Army regularly consider quitting, a survey has revealed.

The first study of attitudes across the Army, Navy and RAF revealed alarming concerns over morale, equipment and pay.

The Ministry of Defence research, which involved more than 24,000 military personnel, found 47 per cent of soldiers and army officers periodically considered handing in their resignation.

The proportion was the same among Royal Navy personnel, while the figure was 37 per cent in the Royal Marines and 44 per cent in the RAF.

The pressure of frequent tours in Afghanistan and Iraq appears to be taking its toll, with 45 per cent of all servicemen and women saying they were unhappy with separation from friends and family.

Asked if shorter gaps between tours were making them more likely to leave the forces, 38 per cent agreed while 47 per cent said it made no difference.

In the Army, nearly three-fifths of of those questioned rated the level of morale as "low" or "very low". In the Royal Navy it was 64 per cent and in the Royal Marines 38 per cent.

The worst level reported was in the RAF, where nearly three-quarters said morale was low.

The survey was carried out between July and October last year, when more than 30 personnel died in the two main combat zones.

Where are the boys of the old Brigade,
Who fought with us side by side?
Shoulder to shoulder, and blade by blade,
Fought till they fell and died!.

They don`t make them like that anymore, hanging on the old barbed wire has gone out of fashion.
How many times have they to be told that Afghanistan and Iraq is a lost cause, now the message is getting through to the troops, how many more thousands of innocent civilians have to lose their lives?.

When you are part of a NATO force, in which the rules of engagement of other NATO contingents prevent them from being put 'in harm's way' and as a consequence you bear more than your fair share of the casualties. Is it any wonder that service men become disillusioned and consider leaving. I'd like to join an army where there's little or no chance of getting killed too.

Canadian Forces have suffered the highest per capita loss of life in Afghanistan.

There's a very big difference between considering the possibility, and actually wanting to quit, for which reason I would suggest that the Daily Mirror headline title of this thread needs changing.

Our troops have NOT said they want out, and it's my opinion that 99% of them DON'T.

What they want is an improvement in the way they are regarded, and treated, by the MOD,and the British Public, and they damn well deserve to get it.

The politicians screw up and the poor bloody squaddie cleans up, often without the latest protective gear, such as body armour and bomb hardened vehicles.

Meanwhile his family back home may be living in conditions that would get a private slum landlord jailed.

No wonder many become disillusioned. They signed up to put their lives on the line, and when they come home after a tour of duty during which half the locals have been trying to kill them, they can't even feel safe wearing their uniforms in the streets where they live.

Then we have some pompous, smug, politico, masquerading as the "Veterans Minister" appearing on telly to let us know that "things have improved a great deal".

Tell it to the marines, mate.

It would serve this government right if the whole lot DID resign.

Don T.

"Canadian Forces have suffered the highest per capita loss of life in Afghanistan"

The Canadian Navy just sold one of their submarines. It had three reverse gears in case they engaged the enemy. And one forward gear in case the enemy came from the rear ! lol

This is another post by the guest who started this thread. Obviously his/her intention is to start a flame war.

At the time of the invasion, the Canadian government defined Canada's reasons for participating in the mission Afghanistan as follows:

Defend Canada's national interests;
Ensure Canadian leadership in world affairs; and
Help Afghanistan rebuild.

Whether you agree with this decision or not Peace's post of 06:01 AM describes the sacrifice of human life in this cause

Canadians fought valiently in WW2 and their memory desrves better than the attempt at 'humour' displayed above IMO
