We shall be visiting Northern Ireland during August. Can anyone give any information about folk sessions / clubs in the area.

Go to www.thesession.org/sessions/, select the Search tab, select Northern Ireland on the drop-down menu and the town/county of your choice. The information may not be up to date.

There is a singing session now started in Derry and is held the first Thursday of the month. I am not sure exactly where yet but I will find out and post the location for you. I has only started a few months and has very good attendance (and attention) I believe. I intend to go along to it myself in August (I'd better find out where it is myself)It is run by Jim Mac Farland now living back in Derry. Jim, an ex All Ireland champion was living in Dublin for years and was a regular singer at the 'Goilin Singers Club'
Should be a good night, might see you there. I will post the venue address as soon as I get it today.

hi songster

the session is held upstairs in Tinneys Pub, Patrick St.(off Strand Road )and the next session is the 7th Aug.starting 9.30ish till 12.30.
The session is a platform for traditional singing (no standard set, only in the listening)

Musicians are also very welcome and will be given a "turn" and listened to like everyone else (not back ground music)but the session is mainly for traditional singing.
see you there then

Jim Mac Farland

Hope you can make it on the 7th. I can assure you that you'll have a great time in Derry. After all we are the centre of the universe!
There are only two kinds of people on this earth those you come from Derry and those who wish they did-(Joke). But seriously come along and enjoy a good nights singing.

Cindy,

It may help contributors if you give an outline of your itinerary

Just to let you know there is no such place as Co. Londonderry.
There is however Co. Derry.

They both exist - it's only confusing because they're in the same place!

If you go to the "Session" website mentioned above, the man to contact is "Ptarmigan". Look him up in the "members" list, and you'll find lots of useful links and contacts.

Just for curiosity I googled both County Derry and County Londonderry.

The results:
County Derry: 114,000 hits
County Londonderry: 1,210,000 hits.

I wouldn't have thought it!

Drop the "County" and repeat the exercise - it just about breaks even!

Yes, but the claim was that there was no "Co. Londonderry"

Co. Derry: 161,000
Co. Londonderry: 255,000

Contae Dhoire: 1,600

I thought Derry was now the official name of the city?

Interestingly, the Irish Wikipedia gives County Londonderry as the translation for Contae Dhoire.

Re the claim - yes, I agree. I thought it was curious how the balance swung, though. I suspect it means that a high proportion of the "County" references are in official documents while a high proportion of the "city" references date from recent political events!

They should end the problem by renaming it Legenderry.

And the city, Derry/Londonderry: "stroke city"

I'm just back from a couple of weeks in Inishowen and took in a few sessions in Buncrana, which is only about 12 miles from Derry city. The best of them you'll find in O'Flaherty's pub: the legendary Dinny McLaughlin usually takes part in the Wednesday night session at 10:00 and they also have a "breakfast session" on Saturday mornings which is very well attended.
