Origins: Xiao Yan Zi / Little Swallow

I'm researching the history of what I think is a very old Chinese folk song called Xiao Yan Zi or Little Swallow. Here's a link to more info and a midi file:

http://www.mamalisa.com/?t=es&p=1206&c=11

I know there are several modern recordings, and I think this same song appears on a Folksways Records Album called Ellie Mao Sings Chinese Folk Songs from 1963. Does anyone know of any earlier recordings or editions? Which region of China is this song from ?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is the sheet music we (at Mama Lisa's World) received, you can hear it sung here.
There they give some information taken from a book (linked). The song is from a movie (The Diary of a Nurse) from the 50's.
"Our friend" Google says "The Little Swallow. Composer: Wang Lu; Wang Yunjie"
