Hardraw w/e 25th July (N. Yorkshire)

22 Jul 08 - 07:11 AM (#2394926)
Subject: Hardraw w/e 25th July
From: HipflaskAndy

This year's Hardraw Gathering takes place on Fri- Sun, 25-27th July 08
Due to extensive renovation to the premises and surround that
has taken place this past year, the event has scaled down a tad
- booking fewer 'acts' for the concert room, for example/

As ever, it will be primarily a 'participants festival'...
There'll be various rooms dedicated to singers, as well as musicians, sessions -
a real come-all-ye - and lots of hand-pulled ale!
Workshops (for guitar, songwriting, and more!)...
Dancing on show from Kitchen Taps and Flash Company- the weather-permitting bandstand concerts
in the grounds leading to Hardraw Force waterfall...
...all for free!

Camping available on the 'improved' site...
Rooms at the inn still available for booking (at time of typing!)
A 'commercial' Campsite right next door...
Concerts on in the Green Gragon's main 'hall' Fri and Sat night
(a small charge for entry? - mebbe, mebbe not, this year!)
Various artists in those concerts - and elsewhere throughout the premises all w/e....
See here.... Hardraw Gathering 08
Hall Bros, Waterland, Brother Crow, Gerry McNeice and the
Duncan McFarlane Band (both electric and acoustic!) and more!

The sessions have traditionally gone on in the bar rooms till almost dawn Fri & Sat!!

All welcome - see you there! Cheers!

We'll see you all there.....it should be a good weekend.

The Green Dragon is a fab pub, and we're pleased to be camping, so we can sample the ales between sets...we promise not to fall over on stage ;-)

Graeme,
Brother Crow.

A word of warning - the schedule of events/timetable on the website is still for LAST year; 2007. Tom

(PS And the rumour about me playing Hartlepool Gathering is untrue, also).

I think we're making the schedule up as we go along - great fun!.

It promises to be another superb weekend. Just hope the rain keeps off for the campers and the bandstand sessions.

Sorry, forgot to add the obligatory winking smiley ( ; )

It's what the semicolon was made for!

Weather forecast (according to Paul Hudson) is 80 degrees

Also, a rumour going around is that the bandstand field is waterlogged

And that's before Hipflask Andy does a repeat of his "Costner" performance!.

We'll have to think of some other "film" moments for him to try.

(I think I'd better get on with my work....:-) ).

The field isn't waterlogged.
The main concert room is indeed, open, not full of furniture.
It's pretty much all sysyems go, cept less 'name' guests this year as
the building works that have taken place have depleted the purse a little.
Still a full w/e of song & dance for free... and ale!
And great waether forecast!!
See ya there!

the 'waterlogged field' it appears may have been a rumour, not started by me I hasten to add.

Perhaps I'd have been better not to mention it

Sorry

Still on for 80 degrees tho!

Woo hoo!

I'd say there are plenty of "names" there. And if it's mostly free than it is going to be a fantastic weekend.

And it's England so who cares about the weather. I've never been to the Green Dragon before. Anyone got a streetmap/multimap link?

Looking forward to seeing some new acts. I am especially looking forward to seeing Gerry McNeice as I keep on missing him when he has played near us.

Should be good listening to the Duncan McFarlane electric band on the bandstand.

And of course Brother Crow (better mention them or they will make me walk)

Well that was a weekend, best weather of the summer (so far), 100 ft shower head in the morning to hammer out the hangover. Great people as always and first class acts. What a pleasure we were able to have the benefit of the grandstand this year even though the sun played havoc with guitar tunings.Sessions everywhere with particular praise for Saturday night / Sundays morning in the front room. Great to see Muppit back with his unique singing/songwriting skills, he has been missed by all of us this year, and as ever Ron Davies treating us to his monologues. Hartlepool Harry walking fully clothed into the pool up to his chin on Sunday afternoon just about summed up the wonderful cartefree-chilled out atmosphere that prevailed throughout the weekend.
Special praise must be given to Flash Company for the fabulous entertainment out front in the hottest part of the day, those girls danced almost to a standstill in front of some great music.
The Otley Crew once again did us proud with the organisation of the event as well as providing wonderful music throughout the weekend, Brother Crow for their music and good craic in the singaround later, Wendy and Paul Arrowsmith - better than ever, The Hall Brothers, well, for being the Hall Brothers, good luck with the single! and Gerry McNiece for being the all rounder that we know he is playing everything from ukelele to double bass and slipping seamlessly into whichever act invited them to join them. (His own sets weren't half good too)!
Also to Duncan and the Band for playing, as always, to the fantastic standard that we always get from them. Great stuff from the best folk / rock band in the business, when will they get the recognition they deserve?
Last of all to Mark and Yvonne for providing superb beer and staff to serve us well into the early hours at one of Yorkshire's finest pubs. Roll on next year.

It was a really great weekend. All the acts were superb and it was nice putting faces to names.

The campsite was really well organised and what amazing surroundings.

Duncan was as good as ever and seeing the electric band outside was a rare treat.
I enjoyed Gerry McNeice's sets both on his own and with the band. He is another to add to my list of acts I wish to see again.
I enjoyed the Hall Brothers set and thought that Michelle Plum's vocals blended well with them. (I bought the single last night and it is well worth it.)
Wendy and Paul played really well at short notice. That Aloe Vera suntan lotion is really good, where can you buy it at?

Of course with being married to Graeme of Brother Crow I will say without bias that they were really good. I think that I might need to supply tissues next time as Saturday's set had a few of their sadder ballads. Never mind at least Ziggy Stardust cheered me up.

Thank you to the organisers for such a wonderful weekend with some great acts.

First time we've been!

Excellent fun.......we only came to play a few in the sessions/ singarounds, see a few friends and catch some of our favourite acts....and we ended up doing 2 sets....well Wendy did (she says thanks for the 1 hour notice!)I just hindered her with the banjo on a couple.

The bandstand is an amazing place to play with sound bouncing off the hills either side and absolutely beautiful surroundings. Sun burn is healing nicely.......proper festival weather at last!

Thanks to Gerry and Ani McNiece for roping us in and for making us honourary members of the Otley Crue (do we get T shirts?). Steve did a superb organisation job..... can't believe he had to go home to go to work on Sunday.

The Hall Brothers were cool (lost any CDs lately?), D McFs were everything that is right about folk rock as always........only downside was that I missed my favourite Brother Crow song and their new one......I'll blame the dog for that (it's a long and not very interesting story). Gerry was great, as was Shaun (also roped in at short notice)......what's the family fascination with ukeleles though?

We'll bring the tent and the kids next year.

Paul

It was a great weekend. Sunshine, music and sans enfants!

Enjoyed catching up with some old friends and making some new ones. think we'll camp next time round definitely (and bring midgey repellent too!) Big thanks to Steve and to Gerry for giving me a couple of unscheduled slots to perform....much appreciated. Performing Sunday afternoon on the "bandstand" was particularly lovely in the beautiful sunshine and the leafy little valley.

Greyt Hound - the Aloe Vera suntan lotion is indeed fab (a factor 30 protection, an aftersun, and a bit of a natural insect repellent all in one!!!). It can be got through me.

Roll on 2009 Gathering and well done the "Otley Crue".

Hello - it was good seeing some of you at Hardraw. I live just down the road in Sedbergh and every year we do an acapella folk harmony singing workshop at the old school in Hardraw alongside the Gathering - this year we had about 40 singers including a folk choir from Slovenia who also sang in concerts and informally in the Green Dragon. I've put some video on youtube including Flash Company dancing outside the Green Dragon, String Theory, the Crni Vrh choir Pobje and others - you can see it at www.youtube.com/Davidburbidge
cheers,
David
