Weather promises a lot of rain and thunderstorms, but this is Goderich, and it could rain just above and below us and miss us entirely. The classes were challenging and the teacher/performers amazing! I am exhausted and looking forward to relaxing and enjoying one of the best music and craft festivals there is.... Crucible were great as always, especially for the one's who caught their late night revels upstairs in the Park House. I liked Liaden too, Irish harmony, who would have thought of that as a concept? Another great Festival even with the weather. JohnB If anyone is in the Orangeville area on Aug 16th, we are taking Crucible "Home" with us for an evening Concert in Hockley Village Seniors Hall. We did this three years ago the last time they were over and had a capacity crowd. Their performance that night was the best anyone had experienced even after seeing them at both Millrace and Goderich for two years. SO we are really looking forward to this one. You would have enjoyed the upstairs sessions at the Park House. For those who weren't there, Mooh played guitar brilliantly in a duet with a local concertina player for a couple of tunes. I was aware that he played guitar, but I didn't know how well. Ditto the comments about Crucible, and I would add Ian Robb and JIIG as well. They helped to put together some of the best pub sessions I've ever been to. The Saturday night session was absolutely memorable - lots of good tunes, but plenty of singing as well. 11 Aug 08 - 09:52 PM (#2411149) Subject: RE: Celtic Roots College and Festival 2008 - From: black walnut I'm a blithering fan of Emily Smith and thrilled that we managed front row seats for her final concert at Main Stage 2 with hubby Jamie McLellan - who himself is quite monstrously wonderful on guitar and fiddle and moonwalking. Nice that Goderich included a bit of bluegrass and old time this year. We had "Banjo Special"'s Arnie Naiman with us for the weekend so I got a private preview concert including my favourite Arnie tune "Heartbeat". Mooh had better be a good guitar player...he owns a Josh House guitar now!! ~b.w. |

It was a gift from my bride for my fiftieth (in March) and it was completed on the Thursday before the festival. Josh was a guitar student of mine a few years ago and has gone on to building world class acoustics. I do as much as I can to promote his work. www.houseguitars.com I wasn't around for the college, as like last year I took a job teaching guitar at the Kincardine Summer Music Festival (www.ksmf.ca) which runs concurrently with The Celtic College. I used to help in the instrument repair course for the CC but they appear to have cut the class as of last year. Being a self-employed folk musician in a small market means working whatever whenever possible. Favourite groups this year were Crucible, Stephan Hannigan & Saskia Tompkins, Emory Lester Set, JIIG, Banjo Special, and Brian McNeill. There weren't any real rockin' drum kit driven celtoids so the level of excitement was perhaps a little less than other years, but the quality of acts was just as high. Thanks Edmund and b.w.! Edmund...Mooh never has a stringed instrument more than 3 inches away from him at any given time. No wonder he can play 'em! The College...one of the really good things was the expansion of craft classes available this year. I hope they stick with that approach. It's a good thing (says the wife of someone who made 2 beautiful necklaces for her in the enamelling class). ~b.w. |
