I get the feeling that Singarounds tend not to be weekly and so a bit harder to nail down. One of those maps for the country with Singarounds on would help us all - especially away from home with work or holiday. It would also help with fitting in with other peoples 'first / second / third' Wednesday etc. of the month. How easy is it to set up one of those maps to which people can add their own details? The Beech is an excellent venue and we are most welcome, which is just as well because it's just about the only place left in Chorlton with a snug. From: BB Tony Watts produces a great Folk Diary which covers singarounds, sessions, open mic nights and conventional folk clubs which have floor spots in (at least) Somerset, Dorset and Devon, and has an e-mail list, but, although I thought it was on the Web, I can't now find it. People are quite keen to get their events publicised when they set them up to begin with, but rarely bother to get in touch when they move; and almost never notify when they stop. If Southern events are missing from the map, that is because the people who run them haven't added them. I've been running club and session listings for years, and many online and print resources exist for such; but accuracy depends on the people who organise or attend them taking the trouble to remember where they have placed details, and updating them when they change. Most of us don't have the time to contact everybody every few months to see what they are up to; and none of us, I think, are psychic; though we do keep an ear to the ground. |

Recently I was looking for sessions near Ambleside and after much frustrating googling found one potential session. Unfortunately it was cancelled for the 4 weeks of August with no indication on the website. I only found out by calling the venue just to check. Any public information re sessions would have to be submitted and kept up to date by organisers who I am sure are stretched to capacity. Organisers need personal assistants. Another thing. I currently attend 2 monthly sessions near Chelmsford. One group would happily welcome visiting performers. The more the merrier. The other I think would not. I have attended 4 sessions of latter and feel quite marginalised. What we learn from this is that it can be very awkward for the visitor if sessions are advertised/ promoted but the group tends to be ummm clique-ish. There needs to be some customer service training in this area. The list of needs to keep sessions rolling on, well publicised, well attended, giving good service, etc. is growing. What we really need is gov'mint funding? Snort! That is one sure way of slinging a spanner into the machinery. Get local authorities involved. If it ain't broke.... fix it until it is. |

I'm just browsing for Sings next week while we're pottering around Lake District after Shrewsbury FF & before Wallingford Bunkfest. I've had a short glance at the FolkMap site (which I found a bit unwieldy when browsing) but agree that these online listings are only as good as the info that we (the Folk Enthusiasts) supply. It's up to us to keep these resources up to date! |

The Twa Dogs in Keswick has an afternoon singaround on alternate Sundays. A call to pub would ascertain which Sundays. The Lamplight in Windermere had a session going on Wednesday nights. It lists all the singing sessions in Ireland and many in the USA. It's fairly well up to date and lists the sessions according to county.
