Hull Shanty Festival 2008- Anyone Going?

09 Aug 08 - 06:35 AM (#2409155)
Subject: Hull Shanty Festival - Anyone Going?
From: Blowzabella

I last went a few years ago but thinking about going along again this year, as i wasn't able to get to see pals at Liverpool this year. Just wondering if any other shanty fanatics are going along? I know from the website that there is a fair old line-up - my own faves from the guestlist being Stormies / Three Sheets to the Wind (Derek Gifford + Keith Kendrick + Geoff Higginbottom)/ Monkeys Fist and Bitter End.

Will there be anything happening on the Friday night, does anyone know? Just wondering whether it would be worth booking accom for Friday & Saturday or just Friday?

There is usually a good session in the White Hart on both Friday night. I expect stuff will be happening at the Minerva too as I believe it is staying open until after the festival.

We will be there aboard the good ship Syntan. I just hope we have a bit more time to show people around this year, it was wall-to-wall performances last year (not that I'm complaining about the music, mind).

Less than 4 weeks, see you somewhere....and get on Syntan if you haven't yet, it's a great space to sing!

For anyone who has not been to the Hull Maritime Festival before, it is worth stressing that this is a more or less FREE festival. The Hull City Council, who are responsible for funding and publicity, do not make this very clear either in their printed or their web site publicity despite the fact that this must be one of the festival's outstandingly attractive features. I presume that the format is roughly the same as in recent past years which is as follows,

There is a large stage, with seating facing, on the town centre dockside where the booked guests perform throughout the day for free.

There are performance sessions on board some of the vessles such as the Syntan with a rota of the booked guests. This is free.

During the day in various pubs around the dockside and down towards the river there are singarounds where every hour booked guests also appear to perform for about 15 minute on a rota system. This is free.

On the Saturday there is a concert that you have to pay to get in to and on the Sunday there is a Survivors' Session where you have to pay. However, there have in the past been free 'fringe' singarounds in The Minerva ( I don't know about the other pubs). Also on the Friday night there has been a fringe singaround in The White Hart.

All of this adds up to a potentially cracking free festival if you want to make it so.

Perhaps Les , Ossenflags or anyone else with more precise times and venues for this year can fill in the details so those wanting to come can know exactly where and when to congregate. I note that several people have asked about the Friday but there has been nothing definite stated about a venue or time.

Now read the Hull City web site publicity reproduced below and you will see what a grand time could be had by all for free (or in exchange for a few jars of ale)

Hull Marina is the daytime setting for open-air performances of sea songs and shanties against a magnificent backdrop of traditional, classic and working vessels.

The quaysides will be alive with demonstrations of traditional crafts including woodcarving, ship bottling, net mending, lobster and crab pot braiding and a coopering demonstration. There will be stalls where visitors can buy maritime paintings, books, smocks, novelties and food and drink. Children will be able to make maritime items at the salt dough workshop or try making a mask. A variety of vessels will also be on display.

Artists already confirmed for this year include -

Bitter End
Cathead
Chris Roche
Dave and Julie Evardson
Hans Weehuizen (Netherlands)

As Brid Widder says, you'll be welcome in the Hop and Vine, but it is rather small. Maggie and I can't do Friday night, but I've had a word with Dean who has the George (Land of Green Ginger) and shanty people will be welcome there. Or there should be room in the Minerva. Have fun, whatever you do!

Excellent Geoff! Ruscadors is the pub previously called the Heritage. Singing usually continues in the Minerva after the 5pm mentioned.

There's also the evening events:

Saturday 6 September 2008
An evening of maritime entertainment taking place in the Mortimer Suite within the prestigious Hull City Hall, 8pm - 11pm. Tickets are £7.50.

Sunday 7 September 2008
The festival will be brought to a close with an informal sing-a-round "Survivors' Session" in the friendly surroundings of The Portland Hotel, Kingston Suite, 8pm - 11pm. Tickets are £4.50.

For non-concert goers there's a chance to see Ossonflags with his band 'Punch the Horse' at Durty Nellies on Saturday from about 9pm or there's the almost-legendary Anti-Shanty in the Minerva from about 8pm, a general session where people are allowed to do non-maritime songs and tunes etc.

I don't know if he believed them... lets hope the beer doesn't run dry!!

Although I only managed to get to the second day of the Festival (after a very wet trip down on Syntan on the Friday) I would like to say how much I enjoyed it, especially the singaround in the Minerva.

I really enjoyed the festival this year. Its the first time I've been and spent enough time there to experience it. It inspired me no end - The acts were pure quality. well done to the organisers and anyone else involved.

I had a great time didnt think it posible for a human to absorb that much rain water, but dried off by Sunday evening-enjoyed the singing especially on Syntan and in the Minerva.

I didn't catch all of the open air performance but I especially liked: Scold's Bridle - their song 'Molly' brought tears to me eyes - Monkey's Orphan, who did 'Fire Down Below'? (it appeals to my scat sense of humour)! and 3 Sheets to the Wind - they sang one that went something like 'a sailor's not a sailor any more?' does anyone know the origins of this song?   Jane :)

That would be this song by Tom Lewis.

Maggie and I had a great time (as usual), and particular thanks to the 'Anti Shantiers' in the Minerva on Saturday night.

Another irony was the song that suggested that when there was no more fishing, the men could get jobs as miners.

Jane,
Might be wrong but I think the song's one of Tom Lewis's.
