It is the art of Chris Jordon a photographer out of Seattle. Take a look, it's very interesting. chris jordon biLL |

10 Aug 08 - 03:15 PM (#2409989) Subject: RE: BS: running the numbers From: M.Ted My point is that these images don't really convey any specific message at all. What you see depends totally on your value bias. If you are horrified by plastic bottles and cups, the images are distasteful, but if you like them, they are fun-- I remember when exactly this sort picture was done for, say, Life Magazine, by whatever industry, bottle caps or batteries or Barbies, to essentially say, "Wow! Look at all the stuff we produce! Isn't it cool?" The images are value neutral--they don't show consequences, or even relationships of any sort- so they are easy to read either way--even though the artist seems to have intended them send a strong message-- |

11 Aug 08 - 11:23 AM (#2410590) Subject: RE: BS: running the numbers From: Paul Burke Did you know that transporting a megaton of TNT (equivalent to the explosive yield of a very moderately sized hydrogen bomb) would require a freight train 400 miles long? Not quite. With a reasonable axle loading of 15 tonnes, a four axle 40 foot boxcar vehicle could carry 60 tonnes. TNT is 1.654 tonnes/ cubic metre, so 60 tonnes would leave plenty of space. The train would be 10077 cars long, or about 76 miles. Even with more standard 60 foot vehicles, we're only just getting to 115 miles. |

12 Aug 08 - 03:06 AM (#2411229) Subject: RE: BS: running the numbers From: Paul Burke If we talked about Rudall Cartes it could go above the line.... How many Rudall Carte 1867 system flutes would you need to hold a megatonne of TNT? I estimate that one flute has an internal volume of about 0.0075 cubic metres, that's 0.0126 tonnes of TNT. So we would need about 792 million flutes, which is about 100,000 times as many flutes as the company made, so the fact that you wouyld need more suicide flautists than there are people in the world wouldn't matter. |
