Lyr Req: Swing Me Higher, Obadiah (A Rick,M Scott)

Hi, I am looking for any information on a song my father learned many years ago in college. The lyrics are

Swing me up a little bit higher, Obadiah do. Swing me up a little bit higher, say you love me, too.

You then repeat the song, but each time you repeat you move the tune up a half step.

Anyone know anything?

Jean

All I know is that it's an old music hall song.
Here's the words, just in case you haven't got them .
Regards Mick Bracken.

When young Obadiah was twenty-one
He fell in love, as most young fellows do
Reg'lar ev'ry Thursday afternoon
He'd call upon his sweetheart Lucy Loo
In the garden he would find her
Seated on a quaint old swing
With true love's devotion
He'd set the swing in motion
And his Lucy dear would sing

Chorus
Swing me just a little bit higher, Obadiah, do
Swing me just a little bit higher, and I'll love you
Tie me on and I'll never fall
Swing over the garden wall
Just a little bit higher, Obadiah, do
Obadiah, do

Obadiah had little time to spoon
For should he dare to stop the swing, she'd sigh
"Keep the pot boiling, there's a dear"
And once more Lucy's tootsies flew on high
All the young men round about there
On the garden wall would climb
And with eager faces
They'd glance at frill and laces
As she warbled all the time

Music by Maurice Scott
Words by Alf. E. Rick

Hi,

I discovered Mudcat searching for this very song for my grandfather, who heard it from his grandfather! Do you have any idea when this song was written or where I might be able to find a recording of it, or sheet music for it? It's amazing to me that someone else could have been looking for this too.

Thanks! Elizabeth

Hi,

I was searching and searching for an old song that my great-great grandfather had sung to my grandfather. He only remembered a few lines of the songs, and not the title or anything. But, miraculously I was able to find the song here at mudcat! Someone else had been searching for the same song last June, of all things, and Brakn you posted the lyrics.

You said the song was an old music hall song, about "Obadiah" by Muarice Scott and Alf E. Rick. I was wondering you could help me with the name of the song, and also with where I might find a recording of it. Thanks! btw- Lester Levy doesn't have it.

I really appreciate it!

Elizabeth

The sheet music at The National Library of Australia has a different title and an extra verse:

SWING ME HIGHER, OBADIAH
Words, Alf. E. Rick. Music, Maurice Scott.
Melbourne : Allan & Co., c1907.
"The great see-saw song as sung in J. C. Williamson's pantomime Humpty Dumpty".
"Copyright 1907 in England and America. The Star Music Publishing Co. Ltd."

1. When young Obadiah was twenty-one,
He fell in love, as most young fellows do.
Reg'lar ev'ry Thursday afternoon,
He'd call upon his sweetheart, Lucy Loo.
In the garden he would find her
Seated on a quaint old swing.
With true love's devotion,
He'd set the swing in motion,
And his Lucy dear would sing:

CHORUS: Swing me just a little bit higher, Obadiah, do!
Swing me just a little bit higher, and I'll love you.
Tie me on and I'll never fall.
Swing me over the garden wall,
Just a little bit higher, Obadiah, do!

2. Obadiah had little time to spoon,
For should he dare to stop the swing, she'd sigh,
"Keep the pot a-boiling; there's a dear,"
And once more Lucy's tootsies flew on high.
All the young men round about there
On the garden walls would climb,
And with eager faces
They'd glance at frill and laces
As she warbled all the time: CHORUS

3. But young Obadiah got his reward
In church one morning they stood side by side.
At the wedding breakfast later on,
Somebody missed the bridegroom and the bride.
All the party went to find them
In the garden by and bye,
But soon they stopped seeking.
The dear old swing was creaking,
And they heard the sweet bride sigh: CHORUS

"Swing me up a little bit higher o-ba-di-a-do
Swing me up a little bit higher I'm in love with you.

Swing me over the garden wall, tie me in so I'll never fall
Swing me up a little bit higher 0-ba-di-a-do."

These are the only lyrics I can recall from grammar school.

This is the song my son sang back in 1992. He learned it in daycare and he's now 20. It made such an impression on him that he's been looking for his old cassette with this song.

We used to sing it when I took him to the park and I was pushing him on the swing. He loved this song.

Could anyone tell me how I can get a copy of the original cassette (it was part of a children's song collection which I bought sometime between 1989 and 1992

Thanks
Lynn

I have been looking for a recording of this song. It must be very old. An old lady sang this to me in the 1950's when I was a child and its always stayed with me. All the furniture in her house was Edwardian.
