BEWARE - that is the weekend of my 60th birthday so I may be twisting a few arms to come and help me stay drunk.

In particular my noisy daughter Rachel and her boyf Sam have promised to come (if I lend them a caravan, she does not do canvas)

So - if we can keep her singing we can just tell people who are lost to turn off the M20, open their windows, listen and follow the sound.

Oh, he is a full kit drummer. Should he bring the kit do you think??? (only joking)

I'm gigging on Saturday and Sunday but I'm hoping to be there on Friday night.

I'd never noticed that Richard needed any help to stay drunk!

He doesn't actually say he needs help to GET drunk, but to STAY drunk. So I suppose he will be legless and require a runner to fetch more beer!!!

I did not think the legal profession were allowed to advertise their services, surely staying drunk may full into this catagory.
However I am sure the Bar, will stay open for you Richard.
We look forward to enjoying your company at another auturm Knockholt.
60 is a great age, it qualifies you to still remember what you done in your youth, plus you can use your 'bus pass' to get you home from KH if you stay too drunk.

Fisheye

We're all set to come. Left over beer from Broadstairs. Mostly left over from my alternative birthday party. Have mentioned it to Norcsalordie, as Biggles' birthday is that weekend. Wrote a new song at Broadstairs which requires banjos.

I have just invented
"PETE THE HATS,MARVALOUS MACHANICAL SLOW COOK STEAMING MACHINE.

Tried and tested this last weekend there was a problem with the prototype. The top tin went BANG and the lid shot some 15ft up in rhe air. A few modifications later the same thing happened so I just done away with the top tin.
This contraption is capable of making a large joint. over a period of about 5 hours.worked out in conjuction with the amount of time I spend down the Tally Ho with Woodsie on the F (A bit like me when Im legless.

Richard.. Im top man at helping folk stay drunk Im a expert at it and I do not get violent or abrusive. fall on fires or guitars.

Damn and blast - I shall still be on my travels up north - well Fleetwood, Leith, Edinburgh, York and all stations heading back south. Have a wonderful time on your 60th. Richard, and I hope you've already applied for the Bus pass, and of course your heating allowance - which might help a little bit towards the bar bill by the sounds of it. To all at the Folkmob, and all the other visitors to Knockholt I hope the weather does you proud and have a fabulous time - as I'm sure you will.

What day are you going up Woodsie? In view of the year I am planning to take time off from the office (if all goes well) and so will arrive Weds, (having received post) I've got someone to check my post Thurs, and I have to pop home on Fri to ready my spare wardo for the princess and boyf - so if you are holidoid from Weds I can prolly collect you en route - it's only from somewhere near Eltham innit?

And so to vanwatch!

Today Paul my lodger (another full kit drummer) and I have re-mantled the oven and hob which should now work safely and planned the built-in PA system, and planned the princess-proofing of the spare wardo.

I shall then jog back up to the field leap the gate go to sleep. I be up with the Lark on the Wednesday to meet the first offical arrivals.
Well its beats getting a train and all that Par-larva with buses and one night alone in a field. What could possibly happen /Go wrong?

Norcsalordie have definitely sung at Blackheath and both Orpingtons and I believe at Tudor Barn. They are young, lively, professional folkies and fans as well as friends of TDL.

You're right about Blackheath (we've been booked for a gig there on December 9th) and the Orpingtons but we never made it to the Tudor Barn - a joy yet to come - and we have of course p[layed the Fox and Hounds

As for fans of TDL - too right we are - It was wonderful watching the audience reaction in the garden at the Neptunes Hall

first disbelief, followed by broad smiles, a quick check with their friends to make sure they were on board, then the phones came out to take pictures, then singing along. I think the disbelief might have had something to do with the go-go dancers :-)

looking forward to next Thursday and hearing your new song again

Yes I cabn bear witness that Norscalardie are a fine young duo that have the talent to take a worn out, tired old folk song, give it a good kick up the ass, a shake down and produce something sparkling and fresh. I can't wait to catch them at KH.

Richard; I hold the same regard for your rendition of some old somgs. Renardyne is a good example - an old song augmented with acoustic driving power chords.

30 Aug 08 - 06:52 AM (#2426170)
Subject: RE: Knockholt Autumn Gold 3rd-7th September
From: Richard Bridge

Thank you Mick. Two points. I think the big "drivers" that I do are probably Famous Flower of Serving Men, Gentlemen of High Renown, and Brave Benbow. None of them use power chords.

Reynardine is pretty much a rip-off of teh Fairport arrangement - no power chords at all - but you are thinking of the bridge (mine, not Fairport's) with that striking repeated reference through the Em7 to and back from the C.

The only one I do that uses a bunch of power chords (that comes to mind at the moment) is "Henry Martin". It' also a LONG way from a 3-chord trick!

Subject: RE: Knockholt Autumn Gold 3rd-7th September
From: Mick Woods

Well maybe not power chords as in dyad 5ths. But certainly power in the total sound that is produced, with a refreshing sound complimenting the vocal.

It has been brought to my attention that folk are not staying on the Knockholt site in the afternoons for the afternoon sessions around the fire.
Instead they are all following Pete the Hat and fellow drinking partner down the Tally Ho.

This is nonsense. We go down the Tally Ho and others come down in our wake because they so wish to. We used to have well attended and not so much well attended work shops in the afternoons but they do not seem to happen now.instead folk sit in there tents or out side playing guitar the fire side is empty. get some workshops up and running and I will attend.

alturnately we could have a game of .....Base ball...Rounders..
Thats it how about a game of
Its a Knockholt Knockout. the first game we could call
PORTA LOO PAR-LARVA.
The Idea of the game is to get the porta loos to the other end of the field by towing them behind a car. and navigating them over various
obsticles. just to make it a little bit harder we could have the opposing teams throwing sheep at each other.

I miss the afternoon fireside sessions too. The last one I remember was with that chap who has since died so young of a heart problem I think it was who had a lovely little Martin 00028 (or maybe it was an Orchestral model with 28 decoration) who certainly knew how to use it, and I suprised him by identifying "20 flight rock" before he was a couple of bars into the intro..

He played some nice blues and ragtime that I was able to mess around on the mandolin to

That was Tony Horncastle, who we dearly miss. We can still do the sessions by the fire it only takes two to start, then the others seem to join in or come along and listen. People did seem to prefer sitting outside their tents at the last one though. I don't know why, I always prefer sitting around a campfire even when the sun is blaxing (high hopes) it just has that magic feel.

Rafflesbear.
I did mentioned the broken pallets to some committee members at the Folkmob club Tudor barn last Wednesday the problem seems to be that we know no one with a van or a pick up truck to collect them?

Believe me they would come in handy due to the fact that our wood supplyer from Dover has kindly blown us out with only a few days to go and has only told Debbie at the last minute resulting in her having to phone round frantically trying to find another supplier.

The way its looking we will be burning that old dead Oak in the centre copse.

Richard, Mick was at the field last night dropping off the marquee and other bits, he said some of the logs were very long so bringing your chainsaw would probably be a good idea, he also said that the grass is about 6 inches high but I don't suppose there is much we can do about that..... you don't happen to have a lawn mower tucked away in your caravan do you?

We came home this afternoon. Thursday night was the only decent break in the weather. Had to come home to run Friday Folk. The long grass has been largely flattened by Brian's mobility scooter, but is getting muddier by the minute. We had a small but largely non-performing circle around the fire on Thursday night. Kev The Clogs was there one minute and gone the next. Norcsalordie were excellent, and happily took turns with us, Richard B and Royston. Lady Raffles sang one song, as did Martin, before the rain started again at midnight. More people arrived today. We wish them well in the Glastonbury-like conditions. BTW Bessie has laringytis, so no Dealers tonight at OFF either.

sitting here in Romany Man's caravan drinking - what a surprise! It is pissing with rain and blowing a gale! The sheep are safe as no bugger is venturing out. The fire is still burning. Lots of little groups eating and drinking in a variety of dry areas. Several hardy folk in the large marquee. Forcast for Sat and Sun looks crap as well! Can we have a Winter Frost Knockholt to make up for it.

The chainsaw got a lot of work(between showers) once I had had a very blunt conversation with its choke mechanism.

Many people would still be there if it were not for Romany Man and his Shogun (and my towropes) extracting the less fortunate from the mud...

Frank had trouble on entry. Mick and Sue Ford had trouble on entry.

Royston bogged on exit with no van on.

Essex Girl bogged on exit with a van on.

Frank bogged on exit in his campervan.

I was luckier than at Pig's Ear and made two runs out (I had two vans there, one for me and one for princess daughter), with the Volvo singing nicely, but I was able to get a fair lick on down the field and take the gate on a trailing throttle.

Alas the turbo (that was the Volvo I had there) has clearly eaten a head gasket.

Manymany thanks to all who provided my birthday celebrations - and in particular to Dilligaf and Essex Girl who did a curry for 30 as my birthday meal - and also for all the wonderful presents and cards.

Despite the weather I think Rachel and Sam must have seen some of the heart of Knockholt, and I think we may get them back another year if the weather is better.

One family nearly spoiled the event with a gratuitous display of racism and bigotry, and a range of other antisocial behaviour. But with care it was possible largely to avoid them.

What hppened to the other potential towees after we left - eg

Richard and Barbara (he should have got off, he used to drive a Kenworth when he was in the USA)

The Fords (they looked at risk. Big caravan, people carrier with bad traction)

Pat and Debs (I reckon Pat can do it - anyway he could probably carry the van out on his own)

Brian and his borrowed van, waiting for relatives and towcar to arrive from Colchester (front wheel drive Mondeo, large van - high risk I'd say!

Who have I left out?

Dilligaf made it off unaided (no van) I think. How is the blagged tent for the twin?

The Barden of England was off unaided with his van - but it was first pull of the day so that almost does not count!

The red LDV I think would have been OK on its own.

What a weekend! After disastrous van trouble (broken master cylinder) we finally made it there on the Friday. Yes the weather was appalling and the wettest knockholt ever but we all got stuck in s'cuse the pun and made the most of it.

Richard I'm so glad you still managed to enjoy your birthday, despite any thoughts you might have you are a very well loved and respected friend to many people and it's a priveledge to know you.

We also heard the mysterious whistler on Sat night it was very surreal and very beautiful, whoever it was they should have come and joined us, perhaps they had and we just couldn't see them!

We made it out in one go as I thought there might be problems we left fairly early before it all got too churned up. Apologies for not staying till last and helping with the marquee as we usually do.

Roll on next year June.

I am pleased to announce that the Fordes did manage to get out of the field unassisted, we made it through the mud and sludge on a wing and a prayer, Brians nephew was holding open the gate for us so we didn't have to stop and I don't know who was more surprised him or us. We then went to find the farmers son and sent him back with his tractor to rescue Brian who thought he was going to be stuck there until June as his nephew wasn't able to get his car into the field. We've not yet made it back for the marquee and up until yesterday the toilets were still there. At least the 14th September knockholt will stand out from all the others not only because of the mud but for the good company, good food, and the brilliant time we all had in spite of the adverse conditions.

Still, we still had to put a tent up this weekend!!! We took our new one down on the Sunday morning, so it was still wet. Put it up in Dilligaf's garden yesterday and it has now dried out nicely and has been packed away until next yeah (yeahhhhh! - we have been camping for a good two thirds of the weekends since April!!).

Never mind the weather - Val and I had a great time. I know I didn't sing as much as I have done in the past, but it was nice to just sit a chill and catch up with everyone, especially Ken and Laura, Richard, Sam and Rachael, Royston to name but a few.

Looking forward already to the Summer '09 one!!!

I am looking for a good home for my little old caravan, Fisheye - but maybe the guitar shelves will not please the distaff side.

The floor is a little creaky in places but that can be re-done in a weekend.

The dent in the roof is watertight - it let not one drop over the last Knockholt and re-doing the mastic is easy if and when it becomes necessary.

The beds can be used as two singles or one double.

The following all work fine: -
Oven
Grill
Hob
Water heater
Gas fire
Shower
TP2 battery pack
All electrics & gas

The fridge was new and nearly £400 last year.

The Portapotti can be removed from the shower room if you wish.

I can also take out the large subwoofer if you wish, leaving a smaller sound system!

She won't last for ever, but she is still eminently usable, and she is light and compact to manhandle and tow.

I can answer the one about who is Rafflesbear - IT'S ME !!

The one who isn't in any of the photos because he was behind the camera - to be honest you don't really know me although TDL do

rafflesbear

Romany man - you're in the wrong thread - we're stretching it already to include the pond in the Crown festival thread - but Knockholt ...... :-)

however if you were going to do it - just remove the fencing and the builders bags - push the rocks into the pond and block up the bit by the Crown where the water drains out - job done 10 minutes max.

Don't worry Vicar, Romany Man is quite harmless when you know him.

Rafflesbear - stop encouraging him!

By the way - no new news on the pond!

Very sneaky Rafflesbear!!! Nice picture of "you" in the caravan - racking my brain to think if I can recognise it.

Fellow Threaders/Fellowess Threaders - our mission is to find and reveal the true identity of the Rafflesbear!! ;-p

Hoff does that mean "Have I had a beer tonight" or "am I having a beer tonight (Tuesday after practice"?

I have been doing some snooping and some research, AND, AND, I might have solved the mystery of the mysterious Rafflesbear!!!

His initials (I THINK) are S R !!!!!!!??????????????

Will S R please reveal his identity? If you have studied the MY Space of Rafflesbear you should be able to work it out that he isn't S R. In my day S R was, and probably is a toothpaste that tastes disgusting. Anyway, for once TDL have the upper hand. Raffles... you know where to get regular fixes of TDL....every Friday and Monday nights.
