18 Aug 08 - 03:47 AM (#2416592) Subject: Blues on TV Friday night last From: Will Fly I've been making a point of catching the re-run of Tony Palmer's 17-part documentary "All You Need Is Love, originally shown on BBC tv in 1979 and now being re-run on More4 on late Fridays. Last week's edition was dedicated to the blues, and had a wealth of (now) historic archive clips. Too many names to mention here except to note some great footage of Victoria Spivey, slightly pissed (I think), playing and singing "Black Snake Blues", and flirting with the cameraman and the producer. Wonderful! Anyone else on to this series? |

18 Aug 08 - 04:31 AM (#2416599) Subject: RE: Blues on TV Friday night last From: Fred McCormick I caught the first episode, which was excellent and truly groundbreaking stuff for its time, about the roots of pop music. I didn't watch any of the subsequent shows because I was under the impression that the rest of the series was about mainstream pop. I would certainly have watched the one about the blues if I'd known. Will, do you know if there's anything of similar ilk coming up in future editions? BTW., I think I've seen that footage of VS. If it's the same one it was made by Granada tv in the early 60s, possibly during one of the Lippman-Rau blues tours, and I think it included Willie Dixon on bass. She spent a lot of time making eyes at her fellow musicians at any rate. |

18 Aug 08 - 04:52 AM (#2416604) Subject: RE: Blues on TV Friday night last From: GUEST They're showing the whole series in 17 parts. Part 1, the introductory one that you saw, was a kinf od preview programme for the whole 16-parter. Last Friday's (on the blues) was no. 4, and the previous ones had been about jazz and ragtime. Tony Palmer mixed a lot up into each programme - showing how various bits interconnected with each other, so I'm going to catch the whole lot - just in case I miss something. The VS clip was made for the programme and shows her in her apartment, at the piano, surrounded by cardboard boxes - with a photo of Bob Dylan pinned to her wall!
Thanks. -Joe Offer- |

In fact the episode I saw was No 2; GOD'S CHILDREN - ORIGINS, which tied down the development of Black American music very neatly. |
