I'm one of those who thinks that birthdays should last at least 3 weeks, so I'm getting catspaw's started for him. According to the authoritative birthday list, catspaw49 is just about to become catspaw50!!!

catspaw--all kidding aside--we are so thankful that you are around to celebrate another year of life! You add your own special flavor to our community & we're glad you're here. Greet Karen, Wayne, & Connie for us. Have a good visit w/ your maw-in-law & make sure you ask her for that birthday hug that I'm sending w/ her!

love,

bbc & Duane D.

Well old "possum breath", I've done my worryin', hopin', waitin' by the phone, song immortalisin', and almost prayin', so I'm gonna pass on one more piece of advice.(well, two more actually) Don't let the bastards get you down, and remember Satchel Paige's advice to not "angry up the blood"!
Happy birthday, and shoot for 75! (at least)

Well, now that the Cat is out o'the bag....seriously, it is my great pleasure and honour to call you my friend. I take even greater pleasure in telling others of this wonderful friend and his recovery through his own oneriness, the love of family, and the incredible community we both belong to. May it now and forever be thus, for thee and thine.

Okay, NOW....when are you going to change that litterbox? And, is the tripod helping with the no lifting over 5 lbs going No. 1 thingy?**BG** If you don't have one maybe Reg, Reg and Reg could make ya one outta all them teeplays; then you could teenkle without lifting! Heehee!

Happy Birthday from Way Out West, ya dear ole' pal o'mine! Say Howdy to the phoaks, while yer at it, and take yer shoes off an set a spell.(You know how we wise women "set a spell" doncha? When we give it the final wave of the wand!:-))

Love ya dearly,

Well thanks Barb for posting this early...my life has been a bit unpredictable lately so I can see why an early post might be in order!!! Just a joke group........

Actually, I saw all the Docs this week and all have said I'm doing great....the one guy is a bit incredulous at how good things look and I couldn't help but use the line from the Pat Sky song. He said, "It was touch and go for awhile and I must admit you seem to be healing very well." Unable to help myself, I said, "Well Doc, I just can't afford to die...it ain't in the budget." This is the same guy that I was acting so weird with due to the drug reaction, and now I think he's ready to call in the shrinks again!!! Seems to have a limited sense of humor.

Thanks once again to all of you for all those things I can never repay...a great bunch of people that I'm lucky to call friends.

Sorry to be a spoil sport, but what exactly is going on here? First we had the twelve days of Alison's birthday. Now we are celebrating Catspaw's early. Next thing you know someone will request some Christmas song like "Christmas by Candlelight".

Me, I am old-fashioned and I'm a-waitin' until the right day. There's a right way to do everythin'.

Good idea, Roger! We like Christmas songs all year 'round! Seriously (sort of), please do wait till Tuesday for your greeting. There will also be those who come on the scene after the 8th. I just feel that we only get a birthday once a year & it should be milked for all it's worth! Each to his own, as they say in France!

best as before,

Dear ???,

It had been my original intent that the birthday/email lists would be used mainly for sending personal messages, virtual cards, etc., so that we wouldn't "clutter" the list w/ *BS*. Folks will be folks, though, & we seem to like some personal threads, too. I hope that people will send personal notes to catspaw & others, as well as posting to the list. Here's your non-name in lights, ???, blessings of the day!

bbc,

??? was me. Thanks for the birthday wishes and the reminder of what the original intention was for the birthday list. I guess I was just feeling a bit worried that we would all end up with our names up on the thread list, and then the list would clutter up with personal message threads, and then the music minded people would complain about too much BS, and we would start losing some of them.

Subject: RE: catspaw's birthday is Tuesday, June 8th
From:

I'd gone to the village of Gato del Lodo to find the old man who still knew the stories. Sitting in the back of the cantina in a white shirt and straw hat, he looked and sounded liked a dessicated Alfonso Bedoya, but his eyes were clear. I brought two of strong local drinks to the table.

"So, you want to hear the Catspaw story. It was a long time ago, he was an old man when I knew him and I was a little boy. But I remember the story."

"It happended in the fiftieth year of his life. The opossums were oppressed, senor. They couldn't sing their songs, or gather with their friends. Catspaw hated that, he couldn't see it happen. He could come and go, cross borders, tell his stories, he was a musician...he was free."

"The Catspaw thought maybe when he crossed the border he could take out a possum or two in his tiple. You know, kind of smuggle them. Well, it didn't work too well. They made the tiple sound dull and bad, jammed down in the sound hole, and Catspaw spent half his time re-stringing and tuning. Much as he loved the possums and their freedom, he hated it when his tiple sounded bad. He needed another plan."

"So he had a talk with the opossums and taught them to sing. You see? He made them act like little marsupial flutes. He would hang that possum tail around his neck, blow into the little ass, and the possum would sing a note. I think you would too, senor. Squeeze a foot and blow, another note; two feet another note; cover an ear another. Like that. Sometimes he could get a hole octave out of one screaming possum. Sometimes the possum wouldn't have too much talent. He would be used as a drum."

"Now the whole village came together to help Catspaw and his possums. Some people gave voice lessons, some taught the possums to stay still and be covered in mud so they would look like flutes. Some people painted possums."

"One time, Catspaw crossed the border with a whole family of possums around his neck, from a big bull possum to a little baby. They all held perfectly still while he blew in their little asses like one big, heavy pan pipe. Catspaw looked like a damned cross between Zamphir and Marlin Perkins."

"Catspaw helped a lot of possums, and he was known as a really talented flute player in his time. The tiple became a sideline."

"That's why we all wear these, here in the village."

The old man tugged at a cord around his neck and produced a little brown ocarina, worn smooth by the years he had carried it next to his heart. " It's a possum, you see? It is the first instrument we give to children here. We wear it to remember. It's good to laugh, to make music, to stay in touch, and to help your friends."

"Catspaw was an old, old man the last time he went on the road, and we don't really know the end of the story. But I tell you this, senor. Late at night you can hear the sound of on ocarina over the hills. That's the Catspaw, blowing it long, sweet, and low."

Many happy returns of the day to Senor Gato. Dave

Happy Birthday, Catspaw!

I have an unusual "gift". I just found out I'm getting a baby 'possum tomorrow (I work in a Zoo hospital, so raise all kinds of babies now and then).

Since she's arriving on your bithday, I could think of no better name for this little 'possum than 'carina, no?

But if I ever blow up her butt, the SPCA will be on me, so we'll just leave it at a name, okay?

Past his fifty, but not yet his prime
More threads to fill, and lots of lost time.

Blowing o'possums, all up and down

With tipples, charangos, ronrocos, too
Our 'Spaw will strum, bill, and surely cuckoo

The Master among us, tis, all must agree,
The Catspaw of Bremen, sitting under a tree!

And I can only say THANKS to all of you for this thread and your birthday wishes.........I'm glad to be around to read them! It's my fervent hope it ain't as hard to reach 60 or 70 as it was to hit 50!!!! I think I used up some of the nine lives at an alarming rate during the past 6 weeks, but I think I got a few more left.

We had a fun day today and (are you ready for this), our "special" son Tristan, who has done very well in other areas but has resisted (and I do mean RESISTED) potty training for all these years (he's 7) USED THE TOILET TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!! What a gift!!! I can't believe it, here I am, now 50, and I'm thinking my best birthday present might be his first real breakthrough in potty training......I mean, have you ever priced diapers for a 7 year old??? Maybe we can get some stuff paid off with the extra money if this keeps moving in the right direction!!!

All the "boys" stopped by and reminded me that I needed to update you on their latest ... uh,well ... let's say "activities" and I will do that this week. Of course they now think they are the ones responsible for potty training Tris as it was Cletus' idea to play "Sink the Cheerios." I must admit that Tris did seem to enjoy this, but we were less than enamored......I mean how would you feel if your bathroom was invaded by half a dozen well meaning dimbulbs, tanked up on Iron City due to the 90 degree temp, and all whizzing away at a toilet bowl filled with Cheerios??? Plus, their marksmanship left something to be desired, leading to the low point of the day when they eventually left.......leaving behind a bathroom to hideous to describe in any sense, visual or olfactory..........geez, I can't talk about it. I'm afraid to go to sleep tonight for fear of the nightmares that are waiting! Maybe it DID help Tris, but Karen and I will never be the same!....nor, I fear, will the bathroom.

Once again, thanks for the birthday greetings and for all your thoughts and prayers and financial support (I'm having a hard time dealing with that one, but I'm working on it--and thanks) during the past weeks. We have a wonderful and very special community...I'm proud to "live" here and I hope you are too.

And Helen......Happy Birthday to you too!!! Hope it was great.....'course you didn't have the "Idiot Gang" playing Sink the Cheerios, but I CAN arrange to send them down under if you want 'em!!!

Hi Cat,

Can't resist...... we don't have Cheerios over here..... but what we did have at the time Ryan was learning was coloured ping pong balls with boats and sharks etc drawn on them...... great fun....

Happy belated birthday Helen, hope it was a good one....

Cats, I don't know if "sink the Cheerios" can ever compare with the great pastime of playing "Bust the Butt" in the pissoire of your local tavern. Man, those filter- tips were tough!

My Dad told me that the original filters were cork. Now that would have been a tough one too!

Actually Leej, my all time favorite was a urinal screen with a propeller arrow thing that stopped on various "witty" sayings, like "Dead-Eye Dick." I remember encountering one of these, called a "Pee-Whirrly" at a Marriott, not some cheap joint, but a Marriott for chrissakes. Being in sales, I got this immediate vision of some Marriott corporate suit type looking down his appointment book:

9:00 -- William Whiteshirt, Xerox
10:30 - Samuel Spectacles, General Business Systems
12:00 - Willie Johnthomas, Peewhirrly, Inc (LUNCH)
"Hey, great......Man I can hardly wait to go to lunch today."

And what a lunch it must have been.....Had to take at least a dozen Martinis to close this one!

I think we're becoming a bit sexist here. Then again, with this kind of mentality, aren't you amazed that men not only controlled the world for so many years, but that they STILL DO?????

I sense a certain amount of thread creep here.

Sink the Cheerios! A group effort! ROFLMAO.

Of course that's for #1, What's for #2, "Bomb the doughnut?"

Thanks, I needed a good laugh on this Wed. am.

Oh my, it's SOOOOOO Good to see that the 'Spaw is getiing up to speed again. I was afraid that someone had slipped at that hospital and removed a large portion of funny bone. But it appears it just took him a while to get back on track....Damn glad to see it!!!

Let us not forget also, WAY TO GO, TRISTAN, Keep up the progress!

Visualize whirrly pees, indeed! I like the lunch concept with the Pee-Whirly Inc guy. After each martini I'll bet that idea just seemed better n better. Leave it to good ol American ingenuity to turn pissing into a pastime. "Today on ABC's Wide World of Sports, we travel to Barcelona Spain with Jim McKay for the Semi-Finals of Men's Target Pissing, where after two sixpacks the American team continues to trail the Irish."

Lets see Catspaw, we started out wishing you a heartfelt Happy Birthday and ended up discussing pee-shooting...seems entirely apropos to me!

Don't worry Charlie, I heard that due to the propensity of procratinators to put things off, the registration deadline for Procrastinator's Unanimous has been extended indefinetely or until someone forgets to put it off any longer, which ever comes first!
