(August 20,2008) "U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio is in critical condition and has limited brainfunction following a hemorrhage, a doctor said Wednesday. Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, collapsed while driving her car Tuesday. Dr. Gus Kious said the 58-year-old Tubbs Jones suffered a brain hemorrhage in an inaccessible part of her brain and that a team of doctors who evaluated her determined she has limited brain function. At a news conference, family friend Joe Hewitt asked people to pray for the congresswoman." |

Some comments: UPDATE 8:15 PM: Here's a statement from House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), a former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus: "I was stunned by the news today of the passing of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. There is a great gap where she stood on behalf of affordable health care, women's issues, access to quality education and fairness in voting. "Whether you were a presidential candidate, a colleague debating on the floor or a friend passing time, you wanted her on your team for her quick legal mind, tenacious debating skills, her infectious humor and that thousand watt smile. My heart is heavy. She was larger than life and we will all greatly miss the Gentlewoman from Cleveland. My prayers are with her family, friends and staff." |

21 Aug 08 - 04:28 PM (#2419695) Subject: RE: Obit: Ohio Congress member Stephanie Tubbs Jon From: Genie Stephanie Tubbs Jones was one of the strongest voices in Congress against the 'war' in Iraq and one of the first to challenge the legitimacy of Dubya's claim to the Presidency in 2000. A strong populist voice for the equal rights of all and defender of our Bill of Rights, she will be sorely missed. She was a shoo-in for re-election this fall, and while I sincerely hope another strong Democrat will be elected to her seat, her shoes are awfully big to fill. My condolences to her family, staff, friends, colleagues, fellow Democrats and all who share her commitment to making our country more egalitarian and fair. Why do the good ones, all too often, die too young? Genie |
