05 Jun 99 - 03:44 AM (#84181) Subject: UK folkies - visitor from Oz in August From: Helen Hi all, A friend of mine from our regular folk session is going to be in the UK in August '99 and wants to know where, what, when and who he should know about to find some good folk music, or just some fun folk music. Any ideas? He is mainly going to spend time in Ireland with a bit of time in Scotland, Wales and England. Thanx Helen |

There is a good traditional session in 'Mattie Moore's' Cairncastle on Saturday afternoons and also a few other sessions in the Larne area on Wednesday nights - The Millbay Inn, Islandmagee and 'Billy Andy's, Ralloo. He will be made very welcome at any of these venues. Herge |
05 Jun 99 - 11:53 AM (#84224) Subject: RE: UK folkies - visitor from Oz in August From: Philippa You need a better title than 'UK' if you're going to Ireland . 31 July - 8 August with the Half-Door Club looks worthwhile. Check it out at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/williamlynch/halfdoor.htm The Ceolas site, which must be at the Mudcat links page, has events listings as far as I recall, maybe a sessions page too. Try Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann for info also. Traditional sessions tend to be mid-week; at weekends you're better off going to a festival or Fleadh. |
06 Jun 99 - 12:34 AM (#84323) Subject: RE: UK folkies - visitor from Oz in August From: Helen Philippa, Thanks for the genltle reminder - I *was* trying to be all-inclusive when I referred to the "UK" but I realise now that I was in fact not including Northern Ireland. My apologies to everyone, and I'd appreciate knowing what the correct name should be: The British Isles, perhaps? Helen |
06 Jun 99 - 05:26 AM (#84346) Subject: RE: UK folkies - visitor from Oz in August From: Philippa Helen, NORTHERN Ireland IS legally (albeit disputedly) in the UK, though not in Britain. "British Isles" would be better, "Britain and Ireland" (or "Ireland and Britain") perhaps even better, though it leaves out Man. Probably your friend will cross the border while he's in Ireland. |
