The Gartan Mother's Lullaby (sheet music)

I have scanned and posted the music/lyrics for The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, as printed in 1909 by Herbert Hughes. The four volumes of his collected Irish Country Songs are out of print, but are available through inter-library loans. I have tried to find them through internet out-of-print sites, but no luck yet.

A friend sent me these lyrics, The question is, did Joseph Campbell translate from the Irish or -as I suspect- are these Irish language lyrics a translation from his English verses?

CODAIL, A LINBH

Codail, a linbh, le crónán na mbeach,
Tráthnóna ciúin atá ann.
'Sí Aoibheall a thagann ón liath-chreag ard
An tír fé chlúid dá báthadh.
A linbhín óig, mo chuid den tsaol,
Is tusa rún mo chléibh,
Ó chanann an criogán an suantraí sámh
La hais na tine tréith.

Codail, a linbh, le suaimhneas id' chroí,
'S ná bíodh ort brón ná crá.
Tá Dia id' fhochair sa chliabhán fós
Ag faire ort ann go lá.
Tá mise led' thaobh ag guí duit fós
' Tabhairt síochána chuig mo rún,
Is aingil na bhflaitheas ag eitilt thart
Ag cur mo ghrá chun suain.

I got the Irish Gaelic lyrics from Ciarán Ó Bréartúin, an Irish musician resident in Italy. He found them in Nancy Calthorpe, "The Calthorpe Collection" (1974). Coincidentally, Nancy Calthorpe was once Ciarán's music theory teacher. Perhaps she wrote the translation? It doesn't seem to be attributed in the collection, as when Ciarán wrote to me he was under the impression that the Irish was the original version, something I very strongly doubt from the flavour of the language.

I know this song from the singing of harpist and singer Mary O'Hara. I found a CD back in the 90s or early 00s, probably re-produced from an LP. From her bio, she apparently started in the 30s.

Mary O'Hara was born in 1935, so I suppose you could say that she started in in the 1930s! 'Gartan' was written by Joseph Campbell and first published in 1904.

Alice, I still have a copy of the original music (somewhere!), if you'd like a copy just PM me.

THE GARTAN MOTHER'S LULLABY

lyrics by Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell)

Sleep O babe, for the red bee hums the silent twilight's fall,
Aoibheall from the grey rock comes, to wrap the world in thrall.
A leanbhan O, my child, my joy, my love my heart's desire,
The crickets sing you lullaby, beside the dying fire.

Dusk is drawn and the Green Man's thorn is wreathed in rings of fog,
Siabhra sails his boat till morn, upon the Starry Bog.
A leanbhan O, the paly moon hath brimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune, I sing O love to you.

Faintly sweet doth the chapel bell, ring o'er the valley dim,
Tearmann's peasant voices swell, in fragrant evening hymn.
A leanbhan O, the low bell rings, my little lamb to rest,
And angel- dreams till morning sings, its music in your breast.

Hi GUEST

I think you'll find that Herbert Hughes collected (and arranged?) the tune. The lyrics are by Joseph Campbell/Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil.

Check with Boosey & Hawkes, I think an English publisher. Also, Southern Music in San Antonio may be able to get you, or point you to, the set called Irish Country Songs. Let us know how you fare. Tw

I found the book 'Irish Country Songs' on Google Books. With it, one can play any number of songs, not just 'Gartan Mother's Lullaby.'

Here's a link to the book:

To find the lullaby, click on the tile icon (four little squares) and then open page 74.

It's a lovely, tranquil tune in 6/8.
