Big National Ceilidh, 18 Oct 2008 UK

Big National Ceilidh
is being held in aid of Wateraid on 18th October.

Obviously Sheffield
has the best band (Glorystrokes) and caller (Martin Harvey) so everyone should go there, but if you REALLY can't make it, then go to your nearest venue.

i'm afraid i wouldn't cross the street to dance to Glorystrokes but Martin is a caller i would go anywhere to dance to especially if he was fronting Peeping Tom or All Blacked Up

Ruff Ceilidhs Cardiff are definitely doing the circasian circle to the tune of er um "that one" at 10pm

and squeezeboxkc I couldn't agree more. But your protestation will fall on deaf ears, literally.

Well Ken, you're not exactly the Glory strokes prime audience are you. Having seen them at Towersey they appeal to the younger crowd who like to live a bit. oh how old people are so apposed to anything new! As for you mr red, just stop whinging!

OK, Squeezeboxkc and others, we have the Siren Sextet for the first half (some ladies you might just recognise)which may be a bit more genteel.

But really I intended this thread for ALL Big National Ceilidh organisers/attendees to publicise their local event.

Well thank you Ken

There's a certain serendipity in the fact that ABU will be playing in Bath that evevning...fronted by me rather than that nice Mr Harvey

Baz
ABU...who would actually love to call with Glorystrokes...in fact they're getting fed up of me dropping hints:-))

You've got it wrong about the best band and caller.
Alberio with Rhodri Davies are at Poynton.

Hey Guys.

It'll be awesome to see those who want to dance to us in Sheffield. I hope everyone else has an appropriately good time dancing to the band of their choice somewhere in the country.

If you don't want to cross the street to listen to/ dance to our band then don't. Have a good time enjoying yourselves with the music YOU like. Instead of Slagging off other people's tastes and efforts. I wouldn't want to see people who Don't like GS at one of our shows. Where's the point in that?

I could have said some really harsh things about some of the people on this forum but I'm not that kind of person.

Much Love

Tom the Drummer.

I am quite happy to sit here and say congrates to Tom on his outstanding handling of his bands slagging off and i totally agree. I also agree, as a young person, that everyone has their own tastes and if you really dont like things then take your dislike somewhere else...or keep it to yourself!
Tom i love your band :) i would worship them if they were Gods and i know so many who would also :)
thanks P

I think perhaps people sometimes forget on forums like these that anyone can read them. Express your opinion, fair enough, but there's not need to be rude. I for one am a big gutted I'm living abroad for the national ceilidh and can't make the GS ceilidh. Well done to Tom for being an adult and the 'grown ups' for...well the opposite.

Glory glory. Loved your Shrewsbury set Tom. You've found your audience and even better you got them dancing and they think its cool to dance to trad tunes (liked the teen spirit set as well). For me i just enjoyed being a badly behaved mum and had a great time dancing with my 15year old daughter. Its new styles of blending trad tunes and dances like yours to appeal to teens that keeps tradition and fun alive .I'm getting a bit of grief she wants to be at your gig
and not mine in Hessle.Come and play Hull please.

Crakin Tom,

Yup, lets all go to see what we like.

Let the other folk go to what they like too!

Times and music change and sometimes us oldies can turn in to grumpy old farts with little tolerance.

Live and let live - make love not war - lets dance and make music not fight and break skulls.

The one get out clause - Tom you are after all the drummer ;-)

It looks like being a fantastic night for dancing all around the UK (and beyond - there are BNC events in the US and even Nigeria) and hopefully will raise a lot of money for a good cause.

Fantastic in concept maybe... but as there are so many dances all on the same night, and at the same time, the pool of punters to buy tickets for each individual dance is drastically diluted ... eg Godalming Borough Hall ceilidhs normally attract people from a very wide area ... but a lot of the regulars will be going to something much more local to them, I suspect. SO it may be good in theory, but I wonder if it will actually be good in practice?? Did anyone actually think that one through?

I think part of the idea (secondary to raising money for wateraid) was to get more people in to the ceilidhs as it is a special, one off event. For instance - I know that the event happening slightly north of sheffield in West Yorks (Burnely in Wharfdale) is already sold out, mostly to people who live in the village who have got behind it as much of a community event - but these people wouldn't have travelled down to sheffield one instead.
Sheffield ticket sales are going very well too!

Great night at the Octagon and congratulations to Ron and Jennie Day for organising the whole thing.

If raffle ticket and CD sales are anything to go by - then it waa it really great success.

Glorystrokes are great to dance to, and appeal to the younger generation.

It really did do a lot for ceilidh dancing. And it would be churlish not to acknowledge the contributions of Martyn Harvey the caller who was his usual fantastic self and the band and sound people (Grab off mudcat).

What a great night

Tom Wright broke his snare drum skin during the evening. It will be up on ebay shortly.

We had a fantastic night in Mickley. Raising over £600 for WaterAid, twice as much as I was expecting. The Trinity Irish Dancers from Hexham did a brilliant set of dances while everyone got their breath back - wonderful! People were so generous - I was overwhelmed! :-)
Three cheers for David and Joey Oliver for having such a fantastic idea and making it work!

We sold out completely and had to turn people away at the door at Hessle Town Hall, capasity 250.Most dancers had never been to a ceilidh before and were local. Average age 30 and lots of teenagers.
The percussion, gurdy, highland pipes, shawms and Euphonium gave it a mad sound as well. Result a long contact list wanting to know when the next one is ! .It got the Water Aid message across and produced some new ceilidh fans!!!!!!!!!! Whooooppppeee

The night was a doddle compared to playing live and being interveiwed on the BBC during the morning.........never again.
Even our pro percussionist was nervous.
Shame some events were cancelled.
We didn't charge much and I think that made it a cheap night out, everyone is watching the money at the moment.
Quite a few families came up and chatted after and said that it had been a real novelty to have had a night out as a family.
Its rare to go out with teenagers.
The teens danced together for Horses Brawl,
I saw a head spin and cartwheel in that set , Great!!!!

Tom Wright (drummer from Glorystrokes and Bass player with Park Bench Social Club) broke his snare drum skin. This is now on Ebay with a starting price of just 0.01p. The tiem is fully signed and authenticated.

If for some reason you were unable to donate by attending - and would like to - here is a great souvenir of the night.

Go to Ebay and type "Glorystrokes" - should take you there.

As has been pointed out on another list, much of the money raised was really donated by bands and callers who performed free, or at a discount.
And the organisers who gave a lot of time, free.
The rest came from the expertise of bands like Albireo and callers like Rhodri, who lured us to the Poynton ceilidh and gave us such a good evening (with and extra band to start to evening Tom Kitching and Edwin Beasant).
