Tech: WinDefender/antispyware.com HELP!

It's not MY computer this time, it's HIS. He is running XP/Windows and this ANNOYING balloon keeps popping up from the bottom task bar, right. It will NOT delete, even a right click just OPENS a window on IE (Firefox is the default) and I can't get RID of it!

It appears to be some site called antispyware.com, which I see is a spyware prog/site itsself, but it also seems to be attached to Windows Defender which is MSN's AV prog.

He HAS Avast! and just ran it...NO threats/infections found.

How can I get RID of this damn thing?
I have looked in Programs, Add/Remove, and it's NOT there! The antispyware.com is INSISTING on taking the computer to their site, and wants a minimum of $50! Heellllppppp!

I had a dose of this about a year ago. It claims to be antispyware, but it's actually a trojan, and the inference must be that it is either Microgrot trying to sell their crap, or someone pretending to be them to make them look bad (coals to Newcastle).

It's a bugger to get rid of. I managed it with step by step assistance from an expert on Techguy Forum.

I suggest giving them a look.

If you type "antispyware.com removal" into Google you'll get lots of sites to tell you what to do.

Actually, no, I didn't. Just one, and I'd already been there. Oh well. He got mad last night and just unplugged it. I'll see what I can do later today.
