Lyr Add: Obama Irish song

31 Aug 08 - 09:12 PM (#2427219)
Subject: Lyr Add: Obama Irish song
From: Barbara

I got this in an email from Faith Petric yesterday, and I asked her permission to post it here as it seems too good not to share. She wrote:
"Barack Obama indeed has Irish ancestry. As he has said "I've got pieces of everybody in me." Church documents, census, immigration and other records tracked down by U.S. genealogists show that Obama's great-great-great-grandfather, Fulmuth Kearney, reared in Moneygall, County Offaly , Ireland, came to the US in 1850 at age 19. His family line eventually produced Ann Durham who married Barack Obama, a Kenyan. In l961 they had a son also named Barack Obama, now running
for President of the United States.
The town of Moneygall has one stop light, two pubs, and a population of 298 which is delighted. Villager Henry Healy, 22, says:
"Sure it's great! It would be brilliant if he won because for on
thing he is related to me, and also it would be good for the village."   The Irish Corrigan Brothers wrote the first three verses and chorus of the song below, Shay Black contributed verses 4 and 5, Chris Caswell number 6 - there are lots, lots more!
Shay hosts the regular Sunday evening music sessions at the Starry
Plow in Berkeley, California where the song has been sung with a new
verse added each week.

^^
Barack O'Bama
Lyrics: The Corrigan Brothers, Shay Black and Chris Caswell
Sung to the tune of: Sweet Betsy from Pike
Traditional tune based on 19th century song
"Villikins and His Dinah"

Chorus
O'Leary, O'Reilly, O'Hare, O'Hara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama
From the old Blarney Stone to the green Hill of Tara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama.

You don't believe me, I hear you say
But Barack's as Irish as was our JFK
His granddaddy's granddaddy came from Moneygall
A village in Offaly, well known to all.

He's as Irish as bacon and cabbage and stew
He's Hawaiian; he's Kenyan; American too
And if he succeeds and he has a chance
I'm sure that our Barack will do Riverdance.

From Kerry and Cork to old Donegal
Let's hear it for Barack, from old Moneygall
From the Lakes of Killarney to old Connemara
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama.

His mam's daddy's granddaddy was one Falmuth Kearney
He's as Irish as any from the Lakes of Killarney
His mam's from a long line of great Irish mammas
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama.

He looks after his own, a true son of St. Patrick
He chose as his mate, Joe Biden, a Catholic,
Proddies, Jews, Muslims, even the Dalai Lama
Know there's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama

From Spain 'cross the waters, from France and beyond,
Our people have come and though many have gone
We remain what we are when we all started out
And of the Black Irish, Barack's one, no doubt.

Tooral U, tooral OO tooral OO, toor a lama
There's no one as Irish as Barack O'Bama

Apparently Barack has some Irish ancestors who were wig makers for the aristocracy back in the day, and some Irish newspaper recently ran an article titled something like "Irish Bigwig, Barack O'Bama."   LOL

It was the same in the early 70s alright Wolfgang - if they thought it'd get them a few million votes, they learned 'If You're Irish Come into the Parlour' quick sharp...
Well done to The Starry Plow version too, gets the Florida votes..

Following up on Genie's comment here are a couple of articles relating to Obama's ancestry from the newly free Irish Times (including mention of the wigmakers) :

This from Shay Black. The tune is NOT 'Sweet Betsy from Pike'.

At last, a song that chronicles in verse Barack Obama's historic journey to become the first Black Irish President of the United States.

Hit the phrase on the bottom right of the screen that says "Watch in high quality."

Recorded on September 14th, 2008 at the Sunday night Irish music session at the Starry Plough pub in Berkeley, California.

This is an open music and song session, now running weekly for over thirteen years.

The basics of the song started with the Corrigan Brothers in Ireland.   www.HardyDrew.com
Extra verse contributions (in some form) by Shay Black, Celia Ramsey, Chris Caswell, Walter Askew (Salty Walt), Craig Johnson, Tom Clancy, Barry Gleeson, Dave Sahn, Peter Heelan.

Please forward, and if you can't learn all the words, learn and sing the chorus.

Yes, we can.

OK, Sharon, I'll agree the tune is not "Sweet Betsy from Pike" in the Shay Black recording, although the lyrics work with "Betsy." The tune is very familiar, but I can't place it - what is it? Hey, maybe it's "Betsy" mixed with "Hallelujah I'm a Bum."

Say, welcome to the Mucat Cafe, Sharon. It's always a pleasure to sing with you, and it's nice to see you here.

HeHeHe, what a great song, lovely job Shay, nice to see & hear you again. There's a slight difference in what Shay's sings & what's posted above, noted espically is a verse towards the end that mentions MaCain, it's a classic verse. Also seated to Shay's right (left as you're looking at the screen) is mudcatter Loni & to his left (our right) holding the fiddle is Chanteyranger. I should also mention that the session's far older than 13 yrs, I was out there in 79-80 & it was a strong weekly session then though I don't know how long Shay's been running it & I know it's been quite a long time I do know that over the yrs I had a chance to to drop in from time to time & it's one of the best sessions I can think of, the playing & singing is always top shelf.
Seeing & hearing that video has me wishing I could get back out there.

My almost 5 year old grandson, Morgan, almost has the chorus of this down. He loves it and asks me to sing it constantly. The other day he had some paper and pen. Made some scribbles on it and brought it to me. I asked him to tell about what he'd "written." He told it was his "new Obama song!"

It was debuted at The Press Room Friday night by Dave Hallowell -- who has since written a few more verses.

It was reprised at a Cape Neddick (Maine) music "par-tay" today in all its glory.

Tune used is definitely NOT "Sweet Betsy From Pike" -- I think it's as Shay Black has done it.

From: Barry Finn

Not at all Michaelr! It was sung tonight (not lead be me) at at our Friday night session at the Press Room (Portsmouth NH) & last Monday evening at the Green Briar in Brighton/Boston, US, Irish trad session ) I was requested by a bouch of the old time Irish musicians to sing it. All it needs now is an update from the campain song it was to the backing of the Prez's song that's it getting morph'd into.

There is a slight veriation between the way the Corrigan Brothers (formerly known as Hardy Drew and the Nancy Boys) sang it, which is close to "Villikens and his Dinah" & the way Shay sings it. I've only heard it (& that the way I sing it) sung the way Shay sang it on U-Tube & truth be told I like it Shay's way & perfere to sing it that way. So I guess when I do sing or refere to it (the song ) I guess I'll have to give both credit but in all fairness the Corrigan Brothers (or should it go to 'Hardy Drew & the Nancy Boys') would be deserving on the lion's share of the credit, after all they are the creator's but their tune would I suspect be Trad? What about the chorus you ask? Are there any Corrigan brother's reading this, it's now getting foggy & we/I might benifit from you sheeding some light.

Reguardless, you did a fantastic job on the song & you should get the recognition due you(s).

Barry
