Note that on the list folk isn't mentioned. Although I have a very wide range of musical taste from avante-garde electronica, jazz, heavy rock, prog, two-tone, pop and lots more besides these days I consider myself a folkie. What are the defining character traits of us folkies then? |

The majority of the ones I know seem to be though. I have come to the conclusion folk music is fascinating because a large number of people interested actually play too, and I think this attracts creative people. |

Most Folk fans know more about history and have an interest in history the other styles. I know that was my first connection with it. Folk musicians have a more indiviualistic against the grain mentality. I mean c'mon we are not going to be in the top 40. We are against everything mainstream and don't relly care what is going on or what kind of trend is going on in the mainstream. We do what we love and are willing to put up with low crowds, unruly crowds, criticism galore for not even attempting to cater to the general concept of modern popular music. I have said it before and I will say it again. Folk musicians are a rebellious breed. We do what we want and don't really care what the expectations and current musical trends the mainstream music scene is having at the time. You can't be a sheep and be a folk musician you'd end up locking yourself in a room and crying for days lol. I heard a guy say one time the 2 craziest things he had ever heard in his life is the term Friendly Fire and the story of the folk musician that was into it for the money lol. I know I put part of that up before but the meaning to me is deep. Folkies do it for love and personal satisfaction. Before I end this rant all I have to say is "If you have such a wide musical taste then I am surprised that you also have nothing better to do than start one more pointless thread." Huh????????? Folk has produced more than its share of unruly, scandalous, and hardcore characters. I saw a show here the other day the listed the top 20 most violent musicians in rock history and Leadbelly was number 2. |

Folkies (mostly)do:- Consider that they are experiencing "normality" when they are at a Folk Festival and think they have been slapped very hard with a cold towel when stopping at a motorway service station on the way back.
