Tech: Fret spacing for 3 string Diatonic instr

I am interested in crafting a 3 string instrument such as the strum stick just as a hobby project through the long winter nights. Would appreciate any advice and particularly information on the fret spacing for a diatonic instrument such as this. Is there a formula on how the spacing is determined in relation to neck lenth etc.
Perhaps there are plans available somewhere, I have done quite extensive searching but have been unable to find very much detailed information on this.

The fret spacing would be the same as for a Dulcimer and would depend on the scale length of the instrument. I suspect google search on dulcimer construction and specifications would answer your question.

A very easy to use fret calculator for diatonic (dulcimer) instruments.....any scale length works!

To experiment, you could use tied-on frets made of nylon fishing line, as used on the viol or saz.

Or make something like a sitar, with movable frets mounted on rails.

A student of mine came back from Ankara with a Saz. The frets were electrical nylon tie-wraps.

I have a hard time believing that could be playable. I've seen a lot of sazes, and never one done that way - the action is normally far too low for such a thick fret not to buzz. I'd guess it was made for the "tourists will buy anything" market.

The twelfth root of two should do and leave out the frets you don't need.
