Chocolate Santas, Mistletoe Chocolates and deep filled mince pies! They even beat the halloween goods this year! Has any one else noticed that the season to be jolly has arrived early? Best wishes, Peter |

The sales lady showed him some fine lingery/lawnjerry/lonjerrie underwear. She asked if he'd like them gift wrapped. I said, "No thank you, we'll eat them here." We left before security arrived. I HATE Christmas. |

Thanks to the posters who reminded us of this ancient custom! Best wishes, Peter |

12 Sep 08 - 11:30 PM (#2438939) Subject: RE: BS: It's Started! From: Sandra in Sydney Craft shops start displaying & selling chrissy designs in the middle of the year so crafty folks can make stuff. This is a good idea, BUT displaying & selling commercial chrissy gifts & food & decorations so early is not. How are the shops going to sell stuff for the other (hallmark or real) holidays left this year if the shelves are full of other stuff? sandra (thinking of the poor unfortunate retailers) Hmmm, I really must start thinking of making chrissy stuff, I'm running bit late, but I have bought a few souvenir things for my next Santee. |

16 Sep 08 - 02:35 PM (#2442305) Subject: RE: BS: It's Started! From: GUEST,Gourmand What's wrong with mince pies being sold and eaten all year round, just like hot cross buns as already said? It's all just merchandise anyway; what really gets me is the incessant and brainless music blaring everywhere, and the waste of electricity caused by the equally brainless competition now to have the most elaborate and vulgar display of illuminated decorations lavished all over houses and gardens. |
|
17 Sep 08 - 06:18 AM (#2442892) Subject: RE: BS: It's Started! From: Waddon Pete Well Gourmand, of course there is nothing to prevent anything being bought and sold (and eaten) at any time of the year. Market forces you might say. But IMHO when you take away the natural demarcations of seasons and events the resultant blurring of the boundaries leaves us all the poorer. One example is runner beans. The best ones are those you grow in your own plot. We have always grown our own runner beans and we never buy any in the shops or out of season. They taste delicious and are something to look forward to. I guess that's the secret. Half the fun is the anticipation! Best wishes, Peter |
