Hurricane Carla in the 1950's which wiped out Cameron, Louisiana. We lived in Beaumont, TX at the time and were far enough inland so that we only had wind and rain but it was enough. If it weren't for the fact that the areas most at risk are low lying coastal ones - meaning with high water tables - I'd want to get in a deep basement and just stay there. |

12 Sep 08 - 06:54 PM (#2438822) Subject: RE: BS: Hurricane Ike From: Bill D We lived in New Orleans from 45-47, and I am told I was in the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Lake Charles area once with my folks, but I was in 1st grade and don't remember....what I DO remember is the hurricane in Sept of '47 that blew water over the levees and flooded us out. It was not a huge one, I gather, but I looked out and saw two palm trees next door bent almost double by wind. I do hope that now, with these fancy warning systems and plenty of lead time, that folks who can will GET OUT OF THE WAY! It is NOT something to be macho about. |

I got nervous because I had not heard anything. Now all the gas stations within a five mile radius of me are EMPTY! I guess everyone thinks the refineries will not be able to deliver around here! 12 Sep 08 - 07:43 PM (#2438847) Subject: RE: BS: Hurricane Ike From: Bee-dubya-ell The lifeguards at Pensacola Beach (500+ miles from Galveston) are saying they've never seen a hurricane as far away as Ike affect the surf like it's done. They had to rescue several surfers yesterday after Ike slammed them against the bottom hard enough to break their surfboards. (Surfers tend to be excellent swimmers and regularly assist in rescues, not get rescued themselves.) The cops are flat out telling people don't surf, don't swim, don't wade, don't even put your toe in the water. It'll grab you, suck you into the Gulf, and you'll die. Period. |

Luna was attempting to establish the first Spanish colony in North America, but the loss of ships and supplies due to the storm ultimately resulted in abandonment of the attempt. The area was not repopulated by the Spanish until 1698. That's why St. Augustine, not Pensacola, is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the U.S. |
