Tech: Windows Delayed Write Failure?

I recently downloaded the SP3 pack and it appears since that I get the following message popping up now and again.

Windows Delayed Write Failure
Windows was unable to save all the data
for the file I: The data has been lost.
This error may be caused by a failure
of your computer hardware or network
connection. Please try to save this
file elsewhere.

It pops up at different times no matter what I seem to be doing, even just reading Mudcat, so I have absolutely no idea what data it may refer to and it doesn't seem to make any difference to anything, but it is just annoying to keep getting the balloon appearing.

Anyone know how I can get rid of it please?

Does a drive I: exist on your system?
My guess is you have a local network and drive I: is on your server. Windows has lost its connection with the server (is it a wireless network by any chance?) or something has stopped on the server.

That message usually means Windows has been lazy and postponed writing some data to a file on the server; now it's decided it had better write the data, perhaps an application is closing and wants to close the file and tidy up, and discovers it can't.

Come to think of it, "I:" by itself isn't really a filename. Heaven knows what Windows thinks it's doing...

I've got some different sized slots for unloading memory cards (cameras etc) but they are E, F, G, H. definitely no I. So it's a complete mystery.

Thanks anyway.

When this happened to me, it turned out the drive was full.

On the system I use at work, the I: drive is a "virtual" network drive where I'm supposed to store my private files, where they will not be viewable by any other employee. It has a size limit that makes it much smaller than a typical physical drive.

I discovered that RealPlayer was set up to store its temporary files on the I: drive. I changed it to store them on the C: drive, and there was no further problem.

I use RealPlayer to listen to online streaming audio from a radio station, which RealPlayer downloads to a temporary file. These files can be quite big if the program is several hours long.

If you don't really have an I: drive, or if the I: drive is meant to be some device that is currently disconnected, and some program thinks it needs to save data to the I: drive, then that could cause the problem, I suppose.

I'd say, check whatever programs were running at the time the error occurred, and find out where each program stores its data.

For example, in RealPlayer, click "Tools" then "Preferences" then "General" and you will see where it saves its files. Click "Browse" if you want to change it.

Thanks Jim,

I looked in RealPlayer but it stores in C drive so not that.

I'll try checking the programmes, although I'm not highly computer literate!!
