For music lovers in West Kent (in fact, any part of Kent), Tom will be the guest at the Pilot, Upper Stone Street, Maidstone, on Monday October 6th.

I would strongly suggest a-not-to-be-missed occasion.

Thanks Don

I'm also in Mickleby (Nr Whitby - with Chris Parkinson), Darlington, Birmingham, Southend, Farnham, Southampton, Corsham and Reading in the next couple of weeks too.

And because myspace is playing up, I've put samples of all the tracks on The Whisper page too. Lyrics are up now as well.

I'm collecting boxes of The Whisper next Wednesday, while on tour down south (see other thread with my name in)

So I'll be playing Santa when I get back to base on Monday week - many thanks to all who sent in jiffy bags!

If anyone else is interested in the £10 offer, email from my website for the address, pronto (offer ends when Abicat goes live)

Or you can buy via Abicat @ 13UKP + PnP, as soon as Ben puts The Whisper on This Page which will be any minute now.

(Lots of great acts available from Abicat, by the way - have a browse around!)

Cheers

Have to say that the new album is absolute brilliant. One of the best albums I have heard this year. Go out and get it everyone. Really enjoyed listening, I will be playing it in the car on the way to Croxdale Folk Club tonight. I especially enjoyed the track Middle English.

I am not Tom's agent or sales assistant and have no affliation with him at all but buy now for Christmas pressies for all your friends.

Hey Eric - don't put me on the spot. These are my mates!! Louis is a consummate musician who plays dozens of instruments (including flute, guitar, banjo and mandolin) to a very high standard, and a seriously gifted writer and performer.

Louis reads a poem over Tom's banjo, ok? lol

West Yorkshire catters - watch out for my review in Winter Tykes News.

A fine effort from Tom as always.

I buy my music from emusic.com, which markets some of the recordings available through CDBaby. emusic.com doesn't have The Whisper yet, but they do have Tom's wonderful Island Stories available for download. I've enjoyed corresponding with Tom, but I had no idea he was such a good musician.
You can find samples of Tom's recordings at his myspace site.

Indeed Joe - Island Stories is a particularly fine CD and I'm glad you are enjoying it - probably still my favourite of Tom's but that, to some extent, is because it is a collection of some of his finest tracks around a theme with a couple of stunning new songs added for good measure. It is rarely that I go more than a couple of weeks without listening to it which I cannot say of many CD's - though I think Jez Lowe's new live one is going to be a serious contender.

I rather overdosed on 'The Whisper' when I first got it as I had a review to write in a fairly short timescale but it too has some absolutely stunning tracks which I am now returning to with great pleasure.

I believe there are many of us here in the UK that are just praying that Tom will keep up his writing and recording even if circumstances sadly seem to insist that his touring days may be coming to a end.

Looks like that's another pint Tom owes me! But also Joe we all owe you and your colleagues a beer for the great work you do in keeping our community together and giving an opportunity to hear new things we may not have come across otherwise. Afraid it may have to be a virtual one though!

Subject: ADD: God Speed (The Snow Goose) Tom Bliss
From: Joe Offer

I came across this wonderful YouTube Recording of Tom Bliss and Tom Napper singing "God Speed (The Snow Goose)." I found the lyrics on the Tom Bliss Website, http://www.turnstone.tv/whisper.html:

GOD SPEED (The Snow Goose)
(Tom Bliss)

Silver white
a symphony of water, wind and light
where a saltmarsh meets the sea
sanctuary

Grey and green
And the painter's eye sees every hue between
and every brushstroke's reeds or rain
to ease his pain

CHORUS
Now it's my time,
My turn to hold you
My time,
My turn to set you free
God-speed

Black and white
the mighty wings that never tired in flight
that crossed an ocean in one bound
brought to ground

Pearl and gold
with violet eyes to fire a heart grown cold
brings her burden to be healed
to be revealed
CHORUS

Black and red
the port aflame, so many good men dead
with peppered sail and angel's wings
salvation brings

Crimson blue
a saltmarsh sunset - gulls fly through
the snow goose has no tale to tell
just farewell
CHORUS

This song will mean little to those who have never read The Snow Goose. Originally published in 1940 as a newspaper short story, and then as a book in 1946, this is the work of the American writer Paul Gallico (1897-1976). It hinges on the relationship between a solitary artist and a young girl who seeks his help in caring for an injured bird. Gallico used a true story from a previous book about a couple who had tended and tamed a wounded snow goose on the Essex Marshes.

Philip, the painter, is based on Gallico's firend, the artist Peter Scott, son of Captain Robert Falcon Scott (of the Antarctic), who, like Philip, lived in a light house - but at Sutton Bridge on the Wash. Peter's mother, the sculpor Kathleen Bruce, made a bust of John Montagu which stands in the hallway at Beaulieu.

Thanks Joe - This is my favourite of all Tom's songs - I still see Tom from time to time at the Topic Folk Club and though I understand his reasons for retiring from the music scene his contributions are greatly missed - he is most certainly one of the great songwriters from these islands
