She and her girlfriends went out to have some fund and a few drinks
my doughter is 19 , then soemone gave them a bottle of " wine "
her girlfrind says , and they started to drink my doughter went outside
the pub and fell down to the ground on her face , in front of a police man . I should thank for that that he was there , and she that she had fall down there not few blocks away ,,, where who know s what was waiting
there ,. so tell you r kid s never take a drink from a stranger .

the doctor told us that , the police man had save her live .
she was taken to a hostspital ASAP and that saved her , she had something
in her body that we dont know yet . but the body responce was like this ,
to turn off everthing .

So here I am again worry like hell .........

she was lucky he was there Skarpi, I hope she recovers quickly.

in Oz we can now buy test strips in shops, so you can dip them into your drink and see if they have been tampered with - scary when you've got kids in that age group.

But good advice never take a drink from a stranger.

My god Skarpi, that's a dreadful thing to have happened. It was just so fortunate that things worked out OK in the end, it could so easily have gone the other way.

Best wishes,

usually here in the states rohypnol seems to be fairly popular to slip in women's drinks....it is the date rape drug...

I hope she will be all right soon...scary shit.

Actually Rohypnol has *very rarely* been used to spike drinks. Similar folklore circulates in the UK; the police investigated pretty thoroughly and never found *any* of it in the dozens of reported cases over a couple of years. There has been one instance involving GHB that came to trial.

Mostly young women collapse simply from drinking too much alcohol.

The really worrying one is methanol. A guy in Edinburgh was blinded that way about 20 years ago after somebody deliberately spiked his drink with it. He was a regular at a pub near where I lived for a few years; I think he was finally murdered for kicks by some other thug.

There were drinks spiked in a pub in Swansea, by the barman, I understand. He probably took a bribe to do it. I know someone who was attacked, and she woke up 2 days later in someone else's clothes, in a caravan.

Anyway, I am in Luxembourg at present, so I will ask around to see if anyone has heard of this sort of thing happening here. My friend here has a daughter of 23, she would probably know.

(BTW There used to be an Icelandic pub here, over 20 years ago, with half an aeroplane sticking out of the front, and bits of plane inside too. But it is long gone.)

The use of drugs of the benzodiazepine group in date rape is not in doubt as far as the police and courts are concerned. Their effects (which include stupor, short-term memory loss, and respiratory depression)are potentiated by alcohol. It is often difficult to prove their use forensically because of their short half-life, which means that they are rapidly metabolised and excreted. It's also extremely unusual to find it in a drink, simply because it is usually spiked in a club or pub, and by the time an investigator comes calling the glass has been washed.

It is a mistake to believe that rape using this sort of drug is folklore. Some years ago here in England a male nurse was convicted of murder after he stole some Midazolam from a drug store and spiked a young woman's drink. Unfortunately for her he misjudged the dose and she died from respiratory arrest. More recently, a wealthy young playboy got a heavy sentence after being convicted of multiple rapes using benzodiazepines. In my local hospital Midazolam is kept in the locked medicine cabinet along with the opiates and every ampoule is accounted for.

A despicable crime. Still rare over here but increasing. The drug is even used on males but with a different intention (robbing them).

So glad that your daughter was found by a policeman.

It's scary having young ones around in this world - there seem to be so many more dangers surrounding them.

Skarpi, what a scare for you! I hope she will be fine soon.

Having once (many years ago) had my drink tampered with - not Rohypnol, another drug, I know there are people who will do this kind of thing.

Skarpi, I'm glad it wasn't worse. I'm glad there was a cop there and that she's getting hospital help. Having three nieces (one just started college) I worry about them just as their father does.

I would feel very, very sorry for anyone caught trying to use a drug on them against their will. When my brother gets angry (and he's slow to anger) he becomes very, very angry indeed. Coldly angry.

I'm glad that she's going to be okay.

I am torn by mixed emotion, my friend. I know the trauma of worrying over a child in trauma only too well. I am grateful that my friend is not reporting a tragedy, but as the father of 3 daughters, and a grandpa of two granddaughters, I would dearly love to lay my hands on the scum that do this type of thing.

Your words are wise, my good friend. Hug them and let them know your love as if they might not be here tomorrow.

All the best,

Mick

Skarpi,

I am so grateful that she was near help and that help came quickly. You are right, we need to hug our loved ones today and be sure to tell them how much we love them. I remember how worried I was when my kids started spreading their wings. I cannot imagine how scared and angry I would feel if anything like this had happened to one of them.

May you and your daughter find peace and a feeling of safety as she recovers. It has been a tough year for you, eh?

HOw awful, but fortunate that she got help right away.

A few years ago my niece was in Italy as an exchange student and something similar might have happened. She ended up in a hospital with great mental confusion, to the extent they could not find out where she belonged so it took some time to connect with the college and contact family. It was terrible. mg

Well I've been buying bottles of beer when I go out rather than glasses cos you can keep hold onto it without fear of spilling it and you can keep your thumb over the opening.

In a restaurant the waiter opens your bottle at the table and pours it in your presence, but in a noisy club you can't be sure who might tamper with your drink or why.

Our prayers and mediations are with you, Skarpi. As a parents, we share your fears, anger, and pain. We hope that her recovery is complete and quick. And that you all are soon restored to peace of mind.

You mentioned that others drank from the bottle--but you didn't mention how or if they were affected. Our best wishes go out to them, as well.

It may be that the wine was not "spiked", but that it was, in fact, contaminated with Sulfur Dioxide, and that your daughter's reaction was not poisoning, but anaphylactic shock. Wine Contamination triggers asthma

The description that you gave--of her body functions totally shutting down immediately after drinking the wine is more consistent with anaphylactic shock, which can come on immediately, than with the effects of a drug, which usually requires ingestion and assimilation into the blood stream.

Either way this was a horrifying experience for you, and a parent's worst nightmare. All the best to you, starting now!

Ted

I am very glad to hear your daughter was saved in time by the policeman and the medics. Something happening to your childen is your worst nightmare - it would be for any parent. Ted could well be right about the wine. There was a scandal here some twenty years ago about certain Italian wines containing anti-freeze and doubtless other pollutants could find their way into wine. In any event, taking drinks from strangers is not a good idea. I hope your daughter will be better soon and that better news will be on its way to you from Luxembourg soon. It is actually a rather charming place in most respects.

Glad she's home Skarpi. It must have been a very worrying time. Sadly it is something that happens here too and for that reason the kids no longer get their drinks in glasses preferring to drink straight from the bottle that they see opened and then keep their thumb over the opening. Mixing drugs and alcohol voluntarily or not is a lethal combination and I am so glad the policeman was there to help and hope that the b****** that did it gets everything they deserve.
