Lyr Req: Lugger on the north wall (Hull)

I was asked last night if I knew a song called "Lugger on the north wall', from Hull. I replied that it sounded like the kind of song I should know, but Google and Digitrad haven't turned up anything. Anybody know the words/tune/author?

Ross

No but must be contemporary as there are no trad songs of sea from Hull. Linda Kelly may be the culprit. Also 'north wall' is not a familiar phrase to me and I was born next to the docks.

Wasn't the North Wall to do with Grimsby as written and sung by Dave Evardson (I think about the demise of the fishing industry)

There is a reference on the link below, about halfway down this article concerning the North Wall at I presume Grimsby Docks.

The only North Wall I know about in Hull is where the north side of the Town Walls was. The north side of our fish dock was usually called the 'dry side'. Also we never went in for luggers much. Go to Grimsby. Go directly to Grimsby. Do not pass 'Go'. Do not collect 200 pounds.

The North Wall is indeed part of Grimsby Docks, and still home to many businesses in the fish and food-processing industries. Ron Baxter (Sailoron) reckons he has heard a song that mentions the "cold North Wall".

Album available from the Chantey Cabin.

I'll call them in the morning! Thanks, Folkiedave.

Dave Evardson's North Wall seems the likely candidate.

Discussed in this thread.

Like the other Humbersiders here I have no knowledge of a North Wall relating to Hull fishing, but there is one at Grimsby. Not surprising when you remember that the Humber has Hull on its north bank, and Grimsby on the south.

maybe the "Lugger on the north wall" is a mishearing/corruption of "along the bleak north wall"

Geoff's suggestion seems a likely one. Dave's song is quite widely known now, and possibly undergoing the 'folk process' as it travels!

There is also a North Wall in Dublin

Thanks, Gnomad, that's the one. Should have thought of Trawlertown myself, we worked with John Connolly and Jane Ludlam on a sort of "East meets West" program of fishing songs for Fylde about ten years ago, and he very likely sang the North Wall song then.

Thanks all for contributions

The Eiger has a 'north face', but that's on the Trent isn't it?
Never was any good at geography!

I'll get me coat.

Just thought I would add this link, where you can listen to a lovely version of The North Wall by CARA from their CD Lost Forgotten. They are appearing at Faldingworth Live on December 5th 2008 together with Shep Woolley who is doing his show Rock n Roll (Elvis to Revolver)
