BS: the best way to shell a boiled egg is...

Sometimes I can do it all right. Sometimes the egg comes to bits. Is there a foolproof way?

Take the egg and put layer after layer of calcium carbonate on it. That will shell it right good.

Put a good does of table salt in the water while boiling.

As soon as you want to stop boiling, run cool water over the eggsv a few seconds, the remoe shell.

Some say that very fresh eggs are harder to shell than older ones, but most of the US crop is month or older, so "too fresh" an unlikely problem.

Along with the salt, a splash of vinegar helps too. And real 'farm fresh' eggs will not peel worth a damn.

Split 'em with a knife--hard tap--and use a teaspoon to gut the little sucker.

From Adrien's site

Cover the eggs with water and boil on low for about 12 minutes
Cool the eggs by placing them in cold water with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and ice. The baking soda raises the pH level and reduces adherence. If you choose not to use baking soda, be sure to move the eggs into cold water with plenty of ice immediately after boiling
Crack the top of the egg and remove a small piece
Crack the bottom (wide end) of the egg and remove a small piece
Hold the egg in your hand and blow vigorously into the narrow end of the egg, which will expel it out the wide end

And....tap the large end (it has the air pocket) against a hard surface, then roll it between your hands to crack the shell all over. Then peel, starting at the large end.

I received this as an e-mail shortly after I had a couple of boiled eggs. I must try it next time. Wonder if it will really work.

Just watched it...I'll be damned. Never ever heard or saw that method before! LOL....

Another tip...if you want devilled/stuffed eggs, stir the eggs often before they come to a boil, or shake them in your hand first to center the yolks. I generally do both. Shake well before boiling and then stir while heating up.

I couldn't watch the video, two voices competing for my attention.

I always put the eggs in cold water, add a bit of salt, boil for 12 minutes, (make sure none of them floats, that is a sure sign it is rotten) pour off the hot water, shake the pot up and down, and back and forth to crack them. Pour cold water on them, and peel. If you remove a piece of the shell with the underlying membrane, the rest will come off quite easily.

My eggs never get old enough, I eat them straight from the hens. My daughte kept some for 3 weeks and said they were a lot harder to peel than shop eggs even then.

Eggs? You EAT eggs in identifiable form?

[my mother told me I quit eating eggs at about 18 months old. I have not eaten egg that I could identify since. But, my cholesterol has been at the bottom of the scale.]

Once eggs are boiled I run undercold water and shake the pan to crack the shells. Then I leave in cold water to cool for awhile before using or storing in the fridge until needed. I tendto boil quantities of eggs because the kids like them in sandwiches. I find that if they are not cracked soon after boiling not only are they more difficult to get out but they end up with a grey rim around the yoke which doesn't look nice.

You're all missing the essential characteristic of the eggshell - ie. it's strength. If you make a small crack at the "equator", hold the "poles" with fingers, and insert thumbnails to prize apart the equator, the "north & south hemispheres" will seperate largely intact. Much neater than peeling.

Mo the caller has it right. You can only peel really old shop bought eggs.

If an egg won't peel it is because it is fresh. That means that it is less than six weeks old.

The best way to shell a boiled egg? Okay.

Place boiled egg in open field. Load howitzer. Insert earplugs. Aim. Pull lanyard.

Ka-BOOM!!

Obtain a good audio recording of an atom bomb explosion. Play it over a good set of speakers, turned up to eleven. Place the egg directly in front of the woofer and let 'er rip. Your neighbours will love this, specially at 7 AM on a Saturday.

Boil the damned egg anyway you want to -- I personally put it in a pan, barely cover it with water, and let it boil dry. Now place the egg -- hot or cool -- on a flat surface. Gently place a small board over the egg, holding it flat with your left hand (right hand if you're a lefty). Raise your other hand, made into a fist, high over head and bring it down on the board while screaming "heeee-YAH!" at the top of your voice. Throw it all away.

This also works with fresh, uncooked eggs; rotten eggs; and those in between.

I don't LIKE boiled eggs....

Roll it to crack the shell then peel under running water (the water gets between the egg and the shell membrane.)

I'm batting about 50% at the moment. I did two eggs yesterday that a lot of the white bits got stuck to the shell. Came out small - like quails eggs. And two that came out all right - not perfect.

The blowing did not work for me, but the underwater peeling 'nearly' worked.

Not too sure of the best way to peel them but as for making them, I found this tale helpful:-

She was standing in the kitchen preparing to boil eggs for breakfast,
wearing only the 'T' shirt that she normally slept in.

As I walked in almost awake, she turned and said softly, 'You've got to make love to me this very moment.'

My eyes lit up and I thought, 'I am either still dreaming or this is going to be my lucky day.'

Not wanting to lose the moment, I embraced her and then gave it my all;
right there on the kitchen table.

Afterwards she said, 'Thanks,' and returned to the stove, her 'T' shirt still around her neck.

A little puzzled, I asked, 'What was that all about?'

(down)

She explained, 'The egg timer's broken.'

An old trick that works is to chock the eggs in a bowl of icewater as soon as they're cooked--this seems to separate the egg from the shell mmbrane. After that, I crack the two ends, and roll the agg firmly between my hands under running water. Shell usually comes off in one piece.

This reminds me of the Zen koan where a person is asked to get an egg out of a glass bottle. No one could do it until a child just broke the bottle.

So... if you are not particular one way to shell an egg is with an over under shotgun.

Oh, you macho boys!!!

May I suggest egg-coddlers???

You break the raw egg (carefully) into a little ceramic thing with a screw-off top, then dip it into boiling water. Lift it out a few minutes later, and unscrew the top.

Very civilized.
