28 Sep 08 - 04:42 AM (#2452000) Subject: Leicester has a Folk Club again! From: Acorn4 Leicester hasn't actually had a 'Folk Club' for about 15 years now, although it has acoustic clubs. A club has just been started at the Barley Mow pub, on the first Friday of the month. Although not exclusively folk, that will be the central focus. Keith Kendrick will be filling the guest slot for December. If you want further details contact Phil on 07517 401221 or email :_ tickinthebox@mail2web.com |

29 Sep 08 - 03:43 AM (#2452587) Subject: RE: Leicester has a Folk Club again! From: Will Fly Well - that brought back memories! When I was a student (in Leeds) in 1964, I spent 3 months in Leicester on a work placement. I lived at the YMCA Hostel in London Rad, which was next to a pub called, if memory serves, the "Victoria". The pub had an upstairs bar, reached by a separate staircase in the yard, and this was the venue for music on 2 or 3 nights each week. Folk on a Friday, Blues on a Saturday and Jazz on a Sunday - I supplemented ny grant by working in the bar on music nights. The owner was an ex-army captain called Tony Collis - a chap with a handlebar moustache who'd run mule trains in Crete during the war, and he was ably assisted by a huge, beaming barman from Co. Claire called Brendan. I saw many great performers at the "Vic" - anyone else old enough to recall the place? |

Well done and good luck, I have lived in New Zealand since 1993,when I left Leicester the folk scene was healthy enough. Is it a weekly club, I am coming back to England in Dec, any chance of a floor spot. Ken Wilson ran a club at the Barley mow , for a while. All the best Alan Stacey. |
29 Sep 08 - 06:18 AM (#2452641) Subject: RE: Leicester has a Folk Club again! From: Acorn4 Good to hear from you ,Al. The club is first Friday of the month. Ken W is still going strong -he does a session every Monday at the Black Horse on Braunstone Gate and various other places. The music scene is still thriving in both city and county, though, as I put in the original post this new venture is nominally a Folk Club. If you're around at the beginning of Dec, give Phil a ring or email (details in original post). Also if you want to know what's going on at any time around L use this link:- Leicester Folk Diary Hope to see you in December! Dave Taylor (saw you at Seagrave last time you were over) |
