Hi Ray

It's on the Cork/Kerry border, high in the mountains. Nearest towns would be Killarney/Kenmare/Macroom.

It certainly is Martin, and some of our neighbours still sing the song in the pub. We know it as 'The beauty spot Glanlee' and we actually live in the Glanlee Valley. It's a great place!
All the best
John

And now I live contentedly among these friends and neighbours
Endowed with all the favours of good fortune and delight
And I've found among the multitude a charming little creature
She's full of admiration, she's my lovely Irish wife
And when we meet at Sunday's noon, at that cozy spot called top-of-Coom
Where songs and stories would illume the hearts of you and me
Among that grand old company of lovely friends and neighbours
We're never tired of praising that beauty spot Glenlea.

I sing the song occasionally BUT..... It's one of those where I get into a panic as I reach the last verse - I keep thinking I'll forget it!

More seriously, I suspect that, for all the wonders of Top-of-Coom, that last verse hangs together less well than the rest of what is, of course, a magnificent song.

Martin, I'm afraid I have to disagree. I think its the perfect finish to the song, even though, as you know, it was composed quite recently. Thats whats great about a living tradition, things keep moving on.

Hi Malc

Looking forward to seeing you at the weekend, as for the song, we have asked some neighbours for details of when it was written etc. I believe the song was written very locally to where we now live, and apparently the man who wrote it didn't travel, so it was all imagination. As for the last verse, all I can say is that when it's sung in a packed bar at the top of coom, the roof nearly lifts off the place, and I'm sure we will hear it once or twice over the festival weekend.

Two of us at least will be heading hotfoot from the "Audlem Bagpipe and Hurdy Gurdy Day" festival to the "Top of Coom" festival. Looking forward to seeing you there on either side of the Cork/Kerry border (the border reputedly goes between the two bars).

Hi Mal
looking forward to seeing you over here, will save you a seat in the marquee.

We are just hoping for kind weather for the weekend, the forecast isn't too bad, Our friends from Frankfurt have just arrived and having plenty of sessions to warm up.

Lot's of the local young people are very excited to be participating and it should be a lot of fun. We think that the young performers talent showcase on Saturday and sunday are some of the nicest parts of the weekend, it's great to encourage the next generation of musicians.

See you next week
Good luck with ryanair!

All the best

John & Marie

Hello,

Could you please tell me if Coom is in Cork or Kerry? Is it the coom nearest to Dunmanway , about an hour and a half from cork airport? Also could you tell the handiest public sevvice to use from cork airport to get to this destination. Also would you know of any B'Bs in the area that I could stay in.

Thank you for your help

Top of Coom is Co. Kerry, but just about. It's on the road to Kilgarvan from Cúil Aodha. You can get a bus to Baile Bhúirne but you would need a taxi or something to get you to Top of Coom after that. B&Bs in Baile Bhúirne area.

Have a great trip.

PS if you are around in the spring we have a similar festival at Bernard Harringtons bar Glengarriff. It's the weekend after st patrick's day.
