Info: The Dubliners

I have been watching most of the Dubliners tunes on "You Tube" and thoroughly enjoy their music. If I am correct there are 5 in the group, or were. The question I have is how many are still living? I ask this because where I live(Quebec)at present, we never hear or rarely hear Irish music. If you want to hear it you have to get out and go bar hopping. There are some great Irish hang outs in Montreal but if you live away from these spots you rarely get to hear folks like the Dubliners.

The original five were, Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaron Bourke and John Sheehan.

Luke, Ronnie and Ciaron are sadly no longer with us, but have been fairly well replaced over the years by, Sean Cannon, Paddy Riley and Patsy Watchorn.

Jim McCann was once in the Dubliners, as was the late Bobby Lynch.

Actually, I think the original group was the Ronnie Drew Group with Ronnie, Barney, the late Bobby Lynch, John and Ciaron.

And if memory serves (which it is doing less and less these days), Bobby replaced Luke, who replaced Bobby again.

Then with Luke firmly in place, they became the Dubliners.

I think......

Not wishing to correct Seamus...but I guess I am...sorry, Seamus. The original line up was 4-Ronnie, Luke, Barney and Ciaron. They were known as the Ronnie Drew Group - then changed their name to the Dubliners - at Luke's suggestion. The 4 recorded one album - titled "the Dubliners with Luke Kelly" and appeared on a couple of festival recordings (with the Corrie Folk Trio and others). Luke left in 1964 and John and Bobby Lynch joined and that line up recorded one LP - "In Concert". There are videos of this line up on youtube and they are billed as the Ronnie Drew group...but had already recorded as and were known as the Dubliners. Luke came back in '65/66 and Bobby Lynch left. Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Ciaron Bourke and John Sheehan remained until 1974 when Ciaron suffered a brain hemorrhage.
