HI,

oh I do like to be beside the seaside
oh I do like to be beside the sea
oh I do like to stroll along the prom, prom, prom
where the brass band plays tiddly-om-pom-pom
oh I do like to be beside the seaside
I'd be beside myself with glee
There are lots of girls besides, I should like to be beside,
Beside the sea side, beside the sea

That was from memory.. I can't remember if there were verses....

Have a look here for a bit more info. The song was written by Mark Sheridan, a Music Hall "turn", who also sang it originally. You can get it on compilations. Let's see if I can remember the words from the record:

Lots of folks delight to spend a summer holiday
Down beside the side of the silvery sea.
I'm no exception to the rule, in fact if I'd my way,
I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.
But if you're just a common-or-garden Smith or Jones or Brown
Who keeps a pub in Town
You've got to settle down.
You save your money all the year till summer comes around,
Then away you go to a place you know
Where the cockle shells are found.

Chorus (and this is the bit where you know the tune!)
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!
I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll along the prom, prom, prom,
Where the brass bands play tiddley-om-pom-pom!
Just let me be beside the seaside,
I'd be beside myself with glee!
And there's lots of girls besides
I should like to be beside,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea!

There's a second verse on MS's record, starting "William Sykes the burglar had been out to work one night", but I've forgotten the rest, sorry. There must have been more verses in the published version, I'm sure; some Music Hall songs must have gone on for ten minutes or more if sung in full - too much to get on a 12" 78.

Who remembers Reginal Dixon at the organ of the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool? OIDLTBBTS used to be his signature tune.

I only just noticed that the title that Paul posted, must have been the version that the Queen and The Royal Family used to sing when they would holiday in Blackpool?

Yes, but the Queen is the only one allowed to sing 'we" the rest of the clan would sing 'one'.

Second Verse (still haven’t cracked the carriage return business) I have heard the burglar verse, but cannot remember it.

Timothy went to Blackpool for a week last Eastertide,
To see what he could see at the side of the sea.
Soon as he left the station there, the first thing he espied,
Was the wine lodge doors open invitingly.
To quench his thirst, he toddled inside and called out for a wine,
Which grew to eight or nine,
Till his nose began to shine.
Said he, “What people see in the sea, I'm sure I fail to see,”
So he caught the train back home again, and to his wife said he—

I've been in Yates's Wine Lodge in Blackpool, abtout welve or thirteen years ago; it was like a disco inside - loud music, flashing lights, and full of kids. I didn't stay! I remember YWL in Walsall (home town) and Birmingham around 1970: very spartan, very Edwardian-looking (as distinct from the 80's "Vicwardian"), The Birmingham one had a long straight bar-room, which I seem to remember was about the length of a swimming pool. It had crash-barrier-like things to lean on (lots of customers, not many seats!), like the ones they used to have on soccer terraces, only brass.

This ain't getting the babby washed, is it?

I know that this a real late reply, but I only found this thread today - someone steered me. No guarantees on this . . .

William Sykes the burglar,
He'd been out of work one night
Filled his bag with jewels, cash, and plate.
Constable Brown felt quite surprised when
William hove in sight
Said he, "The hours you're keeping are far too late."
So, he grabbed him by the collar and lodged him safe and sound in jail
Next morning looking pale
Bill told a tearful tale.
The judge said, "For a couple of months I'm sending you away!
Bill said, "How kind.!
Well if you don't mind
Where I spend my holiday!

Does anyone know of an mp3 recording of this wonderful song? Other than the Queen fragment, that is.

Rolf Harris did a version of this song - well he used the chorus at the end - on a childrens record many many years ago. I sing it occasionally - very occasionally!!

SUNDAY BY THE SEA. (via Rolf Harris)
Sunday morning wake up yawning have a cup of tea
Get the car out lets take Ma out, we can have a spree
Wake the pub up, get some grub up
Bring a crate for me, and when we've got the whole lot packed,
we'll shove the fishing tackle in the back.
And tear off down the road at 14 miles an hour
all the traffic piling up gor blimey what a shower.
There's swearing. braking, overtaking, what a liberty
But I wouldn't miss a Sunday by the sea.

There's lovely peaches on the beaches
laid out in the sun, with costumes slipping,
And birds all dripping and splashing everyone.
There's paddling, floating, fishing, boating
What a lot of fun, If there's a maiden in distress
I'll be the first to see her SOS.
So grab yourself a deckchair if you want a little doze,
Read the Sunday papers while the sand slips through your toes,
Ice cream trollies, kids with lollies, happy as can be,
Oh I wouldn't miss a Sunday by the sea.

Piles of litter, the winds turn bitter & the seas all getting rough,
Burning blisters, LOUD transisters
And if that is not enough, Now it's raining, stop complaining
pack up all the stuff and when we're half way back to town
you start to feel the back tyre going downÉ..
But get the spare out tear your hair out looking for the jack,
pushing pumping heaving thumping trying to get it back,
And by the time you get back home you find you've missed TV
Ð well was it worth it? NO
Well was it worth it? Ð YES,
Yes it's worth it for a Sunday by the sea.

I do like to be beside the seaside!
Oh, I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll along the prom, prom, prom,
While the brass band plays tiddleyompompom!
Oh, just let me be beside the seaside!
I'll be beside myself with glee.
There are lots of girls, besides,
That I'd like to be beside,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea.

Just a very belated comment in response to an earlier one (From: Steve Parkes - Date: 15 Jun 99). He mentions visiting Yates's Wine Lodge in Blackpool (Mid to late 80's) being like a disco and ones in the Midlands (early 70's) being spartan. I would just comment that the difference has more to do with the date than the location.
My brother was working in a Blackpool around the end of the 1970's. I recall going to Fylde Folk Festival at Fleetwood, then catching a tram to Blackpool to visit for a day or two. One of the places we visited was the Wine Lodge, and at that time it fitted the same description as the Midlands ones. Long bars with barrels of sherry ready to turn a tap and fill a glass, sawdust covering the floor and populated by the type of drinker who would appreciate a half pint of sherry.
Yates's changed when the Yuppie Wine Bar became popular. I presume the company decided that it could make money from younger people, rather than a dwindling population of aging alcoholics who no pub would serve.
Quack!
GtD.

Most interesting thread!

Yates in Blackpool used to have a cracking Music Hall upstairs, I even performed there once myself. Been years since I was there though and I have no idea if it is still there.

'I do like to be beside the seaside' was a favourite of a recently departed friend of ours, Chris Johnson, who used to post here under the name 'compton', we sung it last week at our regular monthly session in his memory. Great song.

Alas, the old Yates building burned down in February 2009, an iconic building & a great loss to Blackpool. Not sure what the plans are...

Back on thread, here's a real treat:

The National Library of Australia has the sheet music for I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE, although it is not viewable online. The catalogue entry says, "written and composed by John H. Glover-Kind."

Florrie Forde recorded it in 1909. The Internet Archive has the recording.

The chorus was used as a signature tune by Reginald Dixon (1904-1985), whilst playing the WurliTzer organ in the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool. Since Reg Dixon's death, the tune has been "adopted" by the current organist at the Tower, Phil Kelsall.

Peter: I assume you have a copy of the sheet music and you transcribed from there?

Florrie Forde recorded it like this:

I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE

1. Everyone delights to spend their summer holiday
Down beside the side of the silvery sea.
I'm no exception to the rule. In fact, if I'd my way,
I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.
But when you're just a common-or-garden Smith or Jones or Brown,

You save up all the money you can till summer comes around,
Then away you go
To a spot you know
Where the cockle shells are found.

CHORUS: Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!
I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to be upon the prom, prom, prom,
Where the brass band plays tiddley-om-pom-pom!
So just let me be beside the seaside,
I'll be beside myself with glee!
And there's lots of girls beside
I should like to be beside,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea!
