Is it my computer, or is any else finding it takes an age for the thread titles to upload at the moment when you refresh the "Lyrics and Knowledge" ?

I don't seem to be having a problem here, and I'm on dial-up.

Don't know what to say Bruce. I'll give my web master (Fred)whom you met a call tomorrow and see what the problem is. He is thew one that gave it to me.

It worked for me, but it took a long time. Lotsa megabuggers. Big bandwidth. (Wouldn't that be a great name for a band of large people?)

It's happening again tonight and I haven't the slightest doubt that it is down to the broadband service provided by AOL.

First thing in the morning, fine, last thing at night, diabolical.

But I digress, getting back to AOL, I have no idea of the technicalities involved, but I have done the speedtest.net thing and it comes up at 560 kbs download and 73 kbs upload, which is a joke, when I am paying for a so-called "platinum" service.

well, finally I have ascertained what the problem was, not that I consider my problems and solutions to be of the remotest interest to anybody but me, but my experience just may help somebody else in the same situation.

following a two hour outage yesterday on the part of AOL, I was unable to connect to the internet, and several calls to AOL didn't yield any fruit, so I decided to try a different ADSL modem, a "Netgear" which AOL had sent me about two years ago for some reason which I cannot recall but which I had never used, as they had also sent a "Speedtouch" which I did use.

anyway, I had to contact AOL to get the thing installed, but after a very helpful Indian lady had talked me through the process, the difference was like chalk and cheese.

the computer is back to its former lightning fast performance, so I can only assume that there had been a gradual deterioration in the efficiency of the Speedtouch modem causing the interminable delays in navigating Mudcat as well as many other sites.

Coming back to the subject of mudcat, I have noticed an occasional "hang" during page opening. When this happens, the status bar at the bottom always shows "waiting for AdServe" or something of that sort, indicating that it's a slow response from the Google server that puts the little ads in here.

On at least one occasion, I found the same effect at other sites, including MSNBC's "News of the day" site, where large numbers of ads simply didn't display. (Note that's "large numbers" of the "very large numbers" of ads at MSNBC. Some ads there did still show themselves.)

I haven't seen enough interference to be a real problem, since the ads do contribute to supporting mudcat. I write it off as a slight blot on Google's otherwise sterling reputation.

It does appear that the ad servers occasionally just "drop" the request, since (almost always) the "refresh" button brings the same page up normally - and instantly.

Yes. Not worth trying to read and post here today. Lost posts, hangs, unavailable site notices...
