I thought it would be a good idea to find out what catters play so you can find a catter who plays the same instrument as you!! The more people enter this thread the more usful it will be!!! I play Piano accordion, and have played that for seven years. Its my main instrument. Although I also play Bodhran, flute, whistle and of course spoons!!! Bye, Sam |

I've played the anglo for about 4-5 years now. The piano accordion sence last Oct. (just got out of Palmer Hughes Book #1.
On the concertina, sea chanties, and some Irish and English folk songs. (some Scottish & American too)
However, I think this thread ran once before, several months ago.

You have to be specific at Mudcat because it *is* a folk and blues site. I play Celtic lever harp, and flute, and I have also played around a bit with a doumbek (Egyptian drum) and a bodhran - but I don't inflict these instruments on other people - well, not very often anyway, not until I get better at it. I used to play dulcimer, and can, somewhat. I'm trying to learn hammered dulcimer. I fool around on banjo, mandolin, bones, and spoons. I like to sing more than I like to play. I've always had a wimpy voice, and I've been extremely frustrated. Two weeks ago I asked a friend who sings very well and very loudly, for help. She pointed at someone else. I talked to him for about an hour, and he helped me immensely. Last night in a session, the subject of songs with dates in the first line came up, and I sang the first line of "Diesel and Shale." People looked at me like "yeah, and the rest is...?" I kept going and finished the song. I surprised people - one friend turned around and gave me a "what the hell" look. (He said later he couldn't believe that voice was coming out of me.) People sang along with the chorus. (On the 2 or 3 other occasions I attempted to sing, they didn't.) They applauded for what seemed like a long time when I finished. (They're regulars - I think they were acknowledging my accomplishment of actually being heard.) Please forgive me if this little "happy dance" is out of place, but after years of being virtually mute, finding my voice feels like a miracle. Yeah - I like to sing. |

I was a classical pianist for many years, just discovered traditional Irish & folk music recently. The sense of community and support for newcomers is unlike anything I've experienced in music before. Love the bodhran, I've studied several different styles in the last year, with some amazing bodhran players in San Francisco area. The whistle and recorder have been fun for me too. But every week in sessions I hear someone stand up and belt out a tune, with a voice so clear and strong my own bones vibrate, and I think to myself "that's one instrument I'll never be able to play". My husband (a professional singer for many years) was sweet and encouraging, and finally convinced me to give it a try. I had my first voice lesson yesterday, and I was scared to death. I'm a good enough musician to know I'm a lousy singer. I figured I've been given an old upright honky-tonk piano, and no matter how well I learn to play it, it will never have a Stienway tone. My teacher was precise and insightful. She made me feel comfortable, took me through a variety of exercises I could understand, then said "now make this sound..." What came out of my mouth surprised and amazed me. I looked around to see if there was a ventriloquist in the room. Did that come outta ME? "THAT'S your voice," she says. "We just have to teach you to use it when you sing." I felt foolish for getting teary-eyed, but it's so amazing to think that a sound like that is available to me! So good luck with your singing, sounds like you've got a lot of support-- and congratulations on finding the courage to belt one out in a room full of people! Also misc stuff, eg piano and used to play violin, can play a dozen tunes on concertina but I don't own one. Can play rowdy stuff on a full-bass piano accordion. The zither is great for Civil War stuff and parlor songs. The little harp is good for anything that I can sing in C that has no sharps or flats. It has a bouncy old-timey sound. The guitar, a very nice Martin D-28, is much too good for me but I refuse to part with it. (I do have a Gurian which I may have to part with, though.) - Rita F |

The Washburn I bought the day my Guild was stolen out of a music store parking lot. The reason it was there was my own stupid fault. In the excitement of buying my first amp (stupid, stupid...)I left my dear old friend behind. Two hours later I went back after I discovered it wasn't in the car trunk, and of course, it was gone. I had a gig that night so I needed a guitar. I'm still trying to learn the mandolin. I sing mostly celtic songs and I especially love the ballads, the longer the better, although my age is making it difficult to get through them without blanking out on the words at times--at least that's what I blame it on. |

I wonder how I missed that one--was that one of those "backroom of the Mudcat" threads? Twas a bit painful to read some of those descriptions. Mine too was a D-25, mahogany-colored top. And compared to my Washburn it did have a quieter voice, much like my own. I have to crank myself up to sing with the Cumberland. It's jumbo-sized with a cutout at the base of the neck. It has mother-of-pearl accents around the hole and fancy designs on the neck. You know we ladies like that kind of stuff. It has a full rich sound. I hope whoever took my Guild will treat her kindly (or may he be cursed!). I've been checking around the music resale businesses in the area though, in case just maybe I find my old friend. She's got some dings in certain places and I would know her the second I saw her. Sorry--I'm still grieving the loss. It's only been a little over a year. |

Singing in English is a disadvantage because the language has so many consonant stops (s, t, sh, m, ng, etc). It is a more difficult language to get the greatest potential developed in your voice. For that reason, a good teacher of vocal technique will have you learn songs in Italian just for practice, and for technical muscle and placement development. You may never sing them in public, but using the Italian to practice opens the voice up when you use the techniques that a good teacher can show you. Learning something in French can help you develop the 'lift' of the soft palate as well as singing from the 'mask' of the face. We have had several threads on the topic of singing technique and development. I'll send messages to all the Bay Mudders I know and see if we can take over the place. I play mostly banjo and harmonica--frailing/clawhammer is my favorite banjo style, but I also up-pick and do some slow three-finger picking. On harmonica I've been working the last few years on playing everything crossharp style (C harp for G, G for D, etc.) and use for all but the blues and some railroad songs Lee Oskar Melody Maker harmonicas, made with complete scales in the draw harp key--great for ballads and even for some bluesy types of things: I play a pretty hot "Columbus Stockade Blues" on a G Melody Maker (I have them also in C, D, E, and A, and blues harps in those keys--except E--and Bb, F, low F, and Lee Oskar natural minor harps in Am, Dm, Em). I play straight harp on a lot of fiddle tunes. I also play a bit of guitar and pretty good autoharp. I play with a group (I'm the only Mudder in the bunch) which consists of two banjos--one of which turns into a harmonica on half our songs, three guitars, a fiddle, a mandolin, an autoharp, a keyboard, and a bass player and a couple more vocalists--all of us do some vocals: the autoharp player, all three guitarists, and I do lead vocals on different songs. We're strictly a social band, although we have played a few parties--for food and drinks. I'm looking forward to meeting you, and hearing what Juanita did for your voice. --seed

From: danl once apon a time a played the violin but found it irratating in the extream (when i played it i hasen to add, not when others played it) so i took up the double bass instead. a brief flirtation with the mandolin followed which as far as i was concened was a small double bass the wrong way up but then i discovered these things called chords and got very stuck... ive decided to stick to the most practacle of all instruments now - my voice. It's amazing to me how many musicians don't consider the voice an instrument. I competed last month in the High Plains Old-Time Country Music Show in Douglas, Wyoming, and I made the radical move of standing onstage singing a capella ("Fly Away, Little Pretty Bird" and "Bright Morning Stars are Rising"). One of the judges wrote on his/her remarks "You are so brave!" If a guitarist had stood out there playing alone, would s/he have been considered brave? (I won second place, by the way. Thirty bucks and a trophy that almost looks like it were made out of metal -- but not quite. It is one of my treasures now -- but not nearly so much as the "Miss Congeniality" trophy I won when I was 17....) KC |

Can't take it as fast as it can go, but within the limits of my 7 months training I can make music. It is a great feeling when I get it, everything clicks, and it is a song I'm playing not just some disconnected notes. I need to find someone to play with though so I can get chord practice. chords don't make a song for me alone, but in lessions when I play them and my instructer does melody they do add to the song. Once in a while I pick up recorder, the old plastic alto one from second grade that I've not yet learned, and probably never will. An the old Saw blade, but I need more practice. Interesting interserments, but I need moreparctice. I'm among the select few that can play the spoons. If more people were willing to even try, more people would play them. Next time your at a party of non-folkies pick up the sppons and start playing them, you will see what I mean. |

I also enjoy finding instruments from around the world. One friend has a set line whenever I come up with something new. "Here's another instrument _REX CAN'T PLAY_. If I played just one thing maybe I would get good at it but that's no fun. I have given up on brass instruments and reeds mostly but I keep trying the clarinet. It sounds so neat. Keyboards of any kind confound me. I can't do a thing with a celtic harp. And I won't touch the bagpipes or any of it's cousins as I know where that would lead. I would end up playing nothing else. I love ballads. I sang "I Wonder As I Wander" at the Midnight Mass at Church on Christmas Eve. A Capella(sp?)I love singing. :) I had two Pakistani harps, and now have an old unknown maker wire strung, which has the nicest tone I've ever heard. I see these instruments at fleamarkets and antique shows, and feel sorry for them and have to buy them. I have to quit doing that. My goal with cleaning out the collection is if I'm not going to play it, sell it to someone who will. Getting married isn't cheap!*grin* Jen |

I can pedal the player-piano and sing along but fail to play it. Other instruments I fail to play are a couple of harmonicas and a five-string banjo: my attempts at self teaching convinced me I have a tin ear (I already knew about the lack of hand-eye coordination!)no doubt why my spouse won't let me whistle (more off-key than my singing). I should have stuck to playing on the linoleum.:) When I retire in about 5 years time I WILL learn to play something, I WILL, I WILL.(Otherwise she'll get me doing the garden). |

From: Jeremiah McCaw Voice - sometimes a capella, although my friends claim that's a sure sign that my medication needs adjustment. Talk about working without a net! "A capella", BTW, comes from a Latin phrase meaning "I couldn't afford a guitarist"! Bass guitar, got 4 (I'm becoming a collector in spite of financial realities): Pan bass from the 60's - not a great bass, but it looks so funky I had to have it. Semi-acoustic, symetrical venetian cutaways, sunburst finish, floating bridge & tailpiece design (bridge even has a string mute - this is from the days when electric basses were just supposed to go thud, thud, thud). Gibson Les Paul Triumph (sometimes referred to as the "Recording" model) - 'bout 1973, if we've got it dated accurately. Short-scale neck, like all my basses. I was given it in two pieces, the headstock broken right off. My friend thought I might be able to cannibalize the pickups to improve the Pan's sound. Instead I was fortunate in finding a repair shop ("Don't Fret" in Waterdown, Ontario) who thought they could restore it. As a result, I've got a fine solid body electric. Fender BG-29 acoustic bass guitar - a very recent aquisition. Has a surprisingly deep acoustic tone for its body size, and Fishman electronics on board make things much easier for the sound people at the folk clubs where I hang out. And my pride & joy - an acoustic bass guitar that was built for me by Glen Reid (Burk's Falls, Ontario). I don't care that my playing doesn't merit such an instrument; it's mine and I love it! It has a large sorta lute-shaped body that joins the neck about the 9th fret, miles of bottom end and enough volume to allow me to participate in acoustic singarounds without upsetting the traditionalists by lugging in an amp. For sound systems, I had Ralph Pickersgill of Port Dover, Ontario install pickups in it. I make no claims for my bass playing - I'm an amateur plunker and that's it - but this bass gets me INVITED places! Love it. I moved to acoustic guitar for several years, have learned the basics of tin whistle, and these days I am concentrating on 5-string banjo, which I have found to be the easiest way for me to make a melody that sounds like more than one finger playing on a piano. Also I've picked up a few great tips on singing since I've been frequenting Mudcat - thanks all especially Alice in Montana. Jeremiah McCaw, thanks for posting the link to the acoustic bass pictures. I've built a couple of instruments as a hobby - which is a great kick - and have contemplated building a bass very similar to that. I have always wondered why the big instrument companies insist on sacrificing body volume for neck length on AB's - it was great to see that someone shares my vision of short neck, big body. Please tell me more about the sound and shape of your instrument. |

From: Steve Latimer I inherited a Mansfield 5 String Banjo that my sister lost interest in when the fifth string peg began to slip. She had a guitar by then and ignored the Banjo for years. I got tired of being the only non playing member in the family and fixed the peg and started to play about twelve years ago. I got so that I could play a number of Bluegrass tunes fairly well and then my Daughter was born nine years ago followed 15 months later by my son. Chasing the two of them around gave me little time to play, so I have ignored it for a long time, but I am going to visit relatives at the end of the month, all of whom are players. So, with the children becoming more independant, I'm going to get the old fiver out and get practising so that I can play music as opposed to just listening. I also want to get a bass. |

(I've been *noodling* with it since I learned to sing nursery rhymes!) I've been playing the guitar for around 30 years, the recorder for around 20, the pennywhistle for six months, and the orchestral flute for three weeks. I took piano lessons for 6 weeks when I was 17, but then my house burned down, and I couldn't afford another piano. I loved playing it. I have a bowed instrument with the label: "Fiddlette, one of the "Ette" instruments". It was made by the Gamble Hinged Music Co. in Chicago. I asked them about it but no one there recalls anything about the "Ette" instruments. This Fiddlette has a cheap violin neck and fingerboard attached to a hollowed out block of wood open to the back. This is then attached through a wood rod to a block shaped as a chin rest. The result is a real skinny fiddle kind of like the traveller's kit fiddle of old. But this one was made no earlier than the twenties from its appearance. The sound is dreadful and weak but there was no bridge for it. I modified a violin bridge for the flat surface with limited success. Perhaps there was something fancier that did the job? Does anyone recall this Fiddlette or any of the "Ette" instruments? Rex |

It is a bit worn, but it has character and still is sweet plying. I have a Taylor 410 which has a nice, big and warm sound. I have a Washburn banjo. It is an Asian made banjo and I enjoy plunking around on it. I really love some of the old modal tunings, (g,C,G,C,E) is a lot of fun to hammer around with. About four years ago I kept finding myself in the compahy of some serious bluegrass people. Before any of us knew it we were performing. I had the only mandolin, a Flatiron flat top that was real loud and screaming and I knew my way around its fret board, but really was not very 'bluegrass literate'. I believe I was more obnoxious than the banjo! I soon moved up to a Flatiron A-5 Artist model, (it was brand new and I got a great deal on it.) I have fallen in love with the instrument. I was really forced to learn to play bluegrass. It has been wonderful musical discipline. My solos and licks aren't real heavy on the traditional side yet, and some died in the wool purists look askance at me when I don't pick 'em out like Monroe used to. I can only say that I wish I could! The most fun has been discovering the chunk, the variety of chord forms, and being the 'snare drum' of the band, working off of our bass player. |

My playing style is best described, I suppose as a sort of "degenerate classical guitar style". 2. 5-string openback banjo, clawhammer (or frailing if you like that word better and think it's a different thing). Each of these is used almost exclusively for accompanying my singing of folk-type songs, usually story songs. I'm a solo entertainment act (when I can get anyone to listen). Over the years I've tried and failed at teaching myself harmonica and flageolet (a sort of recorder-like woodwind). It's the big boxy wooden thing right in the middle of the picture with the woman sitting behind it. It's related to the kind of melodeon you know about in that it is a free reed instrument with a bellows. But it's in a piano-like cabinet and the bellows are operated with foot pedals. Not too bad at mandolin, mandola, tenor banjo (short scale - smallish hands) Sort of on the rough side of ok at guitar (after 35+ years of playing it), bass guitar, tin whistle and bodhran. Pretty dodgy at fiddle, harmonica and bouzouki, but have still been known to play them in a session! |

The I play a "Lowebow" invented and made by John Lowe himself... It is a 4 stringed instrument with two dowel rods for a neck and a cigar box for the body... It has 3 homemade pickups inside the cigar box and is played with a combination of fingering and slide and make an incfrexdible amount of music and really surprises people when they first hear it... Then I play a custom electric guitar that is made froma slab of wood and a neck... It's a 5 string and has two handwound pickups and is a prototype for the "Honeydripper" guitar that was made especially for the movie by the same name... It is awesome... Then when I am in the mood and have a little extra energy I'll set up a drum set in front of me and play snare/highhat/bass with my feet while playing any of the above... Thinkin' seriously about going to Blues Week this summer and taking Phil Wiggins beginner harmonica class so I can add that into the mix... Still 50/50 on that... B~ |

Had it about 8 months. - An Epiphone Les Paul "Black Beauty" bought second-hand off Ebay 18 months ago. Really nice to play and a bargain too. |

From: Rowan Leaving the voice aside, I started on lagerphone and progressed to anglo, on which I can make a nuisance of myself in several genres. In Flying Pieman I was frequently observed doing various imitations on mouth organs (OK, "harmonicas") and single row melodeons, which I like for their fruitiness but they take up a bit of room in the car. The bandoneons have a similar fruitiness and handle like the anglo (in one case) and a piano (in the other) but they take up even more room in the car. I've inherited a 5 string banjo and a fiddle, so I'll probably annoy people with those in a while. The daughters have made good use of the flute, piano and recorders I had acquired over the years and are now rather good; much better on them than I could ever be. Cheers, Rowan |

Also Tabla drums, but I underestimated the skill needed to play these well! I may come back to them one day. Riqq is a new instrument to me, but I'm amazed how versatile they are. The Oud is also fairly new, but I love how expressive and moody they are. Banjo though is the "desert island" instrument for me... Pete. |

I have a mandolin, but only know a few chords to fool around with. Kris plays mostly fiddle, but is OK on upright bass, and can do basic chording on guitar. She took classical piano lessons all through childhood, then walked away from it after college. But she just bought one of those newer electronical pianos with more computing power and memory than my first few computers, and is getting back into it. All kidding aside, Kendall's Taylor has more guts than any other Taylor I've heard, and than many Martins. But if I had his 12-string I'd go for long periods without playing the six at all. Peter |

Did a djembe gig a while back but I'm really no drummer of any matter. One of my bands just got (finally!) a new keys player so I no longer need to drag the keys around with me and I can concentrate on guitars. Still collecting guitars and stuff. Since I last posted 8 years ago, there have been many guitars come and go, but some have stuck with me like a '79 Beneteau flattop, a House cutaway flattop, Godin Acousticaster, and several solidbody electrics (Godin Belmont, Tele Aerodyne, Godin LG, Tele Thinline). Also picked up a Yamaha digital piano, several amps (Traynor YCV50, YCV20, AM150 acoustic amp, etc), a nice djembe, a cheap baritone uke, and 2 cheap but nice banjos from GoldTone (BG250, IT250). Gone are the Washburn banjo, a Fender amp or two, an electric guitar or two, the old upright piano, some Remo djembes... The core useful collection gets better at the expense of the lesser stuff which is as it should be. And don't get me started on books, mostly instructional stuff and tune books. Peace, Mooh. |

I'd love to have a go one day at the piano accordian, violin, mandolin, banjo and djembe drum as well just to name a few, there are just too many instruments that I want to learn! I heard John Thompson play the concertina at this years National Folk Festival in Canberra in a session, and it's the first time that I thought I might like to have a crack at the concertina as well. There's just so many inspiring musicians out there! |

I've now got 4 five strings: An open back Lo Gordon (Cedar Mountain) banjo with wooden tone ring (the Dwight Diller model) with a lovely mellow woody tone. A. open back Bart Reiter Tubaphone with a brighter pleasant tone, lots of volume. A Deering Sierra bluegrass banjo with resonator that I was lucky to find in an auction for a lot less than I would otherwise have had to pay. Very loud bluegrassy sound, but can be played much quieter. Too heavy for sessions, though. An El Cheapo Korean banjo that I can dismantle to put in my luggage for skiing holidays. Other instruments: 2 fiddles (standard and cross tuned) that I've been trying to play Old Time music on for 10 years with mixed success. I get it out in sessions when I'm the best Old Time fiddler there (very rare). A cheap electric fiddle which I can practice quietly on after midnight without plugging it in. An old Yamaha FG340 guitar that I occasionally pick up and strum. A Roumanian flat mandolin that I've recently replaced the tailpiece on. I find that picking it is harder than bowing the fiddle for the same tunes. A John Grey banjulele that mostly hangs on the wall. A few blues harmonicas in different keys that I used to play much more than I do now. A couple of whistles (half a dozen old irish tunes I've known for years) A couple of Jaw's harps. A stone jug and couple of kazoos - you never know when they'll come in handy! Cheers Ray |
