12 Oct 08 - 02:34 PM (#2463773) Subject: RE: Playing The Banjo During A Brain Op From: Amos Excerpt: musician who underwent brain surgery to treat a hand tremor played his banjo throughout to test the success of the procedure. Eddie Adcock is one of the pillars of Bluegrass Music and realised his tremor could threaten his ability to perform professionally. Surgeons placed electrodes in Mr Adcock's brain and fitted a pace maker in his chest which delivers a small current which shuts down the region of his brain causing the tremors. Story and video here. 13 Oct 08 - 02:09 AM (#2464137) Subject: Man plays banjo during brain op From: pavane I am sure this one is of interest: BBC news A musician who underwent brain surgery to treat a hand tremor played his banjo throughout to test the success of the procedure. Surgeons placed electrodes in Mr Adcock's brain and fitted a pace maker in his chest which delivers a small current which shuts down the region of his brain causing the tremors. |

13 Oct 08 - 12:41 PM (#2464511) Subject: RE: Banjo playing not good enough yet? [brain surgery] From: GUEST,leeneia I suspect the phrase 'Surgeons placed electrodes in Mr Adcock's brain' is misleading. The atmosphere seems much too casual for an operating room where the living brain is exposed. It would be interesting to know more about the procedure they are using. (Good one, BillD.) |
31 Oct 08 - 10:53 AM (#2480864) Subject: Dain Bramage: Bluegrass and Strokes From: Mrrzy From News Of The Weird: Legendary banjo player Eddie Adcock, age 70 and suffering hand tremors that failed to respond to medication, volunteered for a revolutionary neurosurgery in August in which he finger-picked tunes while his brain was exposed, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center surgeons tried to locate the defective area. In "deep brain stimulation," doctors find a poorly responding site and use electrodes to arouse it properly. As Adcock, conscious but pain-free, picked out melodies, doctors probed until suddenly Adcock's playing became disjointed, and electrodes were assigned to that spot. By October, according to an ABC News report, Adcock, with a button-activated chest pacemaker wired to his head, was back on stage, as quick-fingered as ever. [ABC News, 10-3-08; The Bluegrass Blog, 9-9-08] Pretty cool, eh? |

[brain surg From: Will Fly There's this medieval lute joke (he says, diverting the talk away from banjos): "If a man hath a lute for 60 years, he shall spend 40 of them tuning it and 20 playing it out of tune."
