As a native Detroiter and a child of the Motown-sound era, this is very sad news. This from the Detroit Free Press.

A great singer of some of the best songs. RIP Mr. Stubbs.

A few songs could always be counted upon to be playing in the snack bar/lounge at Berea when I was in college and the Four Tops must have damn near done half of them, be they original (Baby I Need Your Lovin', Reach Out) or covers (Renee). Damn but they were great!

I know he'd been very ill for a long time and I hope he always knew how much the music and his voice were loved by so many. Rest in Peace............

Just listening to a great story about him on NPR, right now. Beautiful...sad that he is now gone.

RIP and thanks, Mr. Stubbs!

Probably my favorite voice from the 60s (and there sure were some great voices in the 60s). Just Ask The Lonely
is as good as a song gets. And Stubb's voice was as good as a voice gets.

What a giant.

Damn, John, old buddy. That might be one of the greatest ever. I grew up on his music, and like Maryanne (Hello, my friend!!) I feel a certain kinship being a native of the area.

This man's voice will be heard always.

I wasn't a big soul music fan back in the day but Levi and the Four Tops were an exception. Not a pretty voice, but a voice that seemed to shake with passion and pain.

A fantastic voice, now sadly gone - but a wonderful legacy of fabulous recorded performances by One Of The Very Best.
RIP, you were a Diamond Geezer.

Such a beautiful singer and such great songs and a wonderful vocal band. Wasn't it Billy Bragg who recorded Levi stubbs' tears?

My wife and I had the pleasure of hearing the Four Tops several years ago. What impressed me most was that they were all original members. None of this stuff where one member was a replacement, ten years after the original group started breaking up. We heard them at an Oyster Festival in Norwalk, Connecticut. If people can have festivals, why not oysters? It was a small, outdoor setting, and we were twenty feet away. A memorable night.
