For any catters within range of Richmond, Virginia - don't miss this wonderful concert!

On October 25th, The Richmond Folk Music Society will present Judy Cook and Lisa Null in concert. The theme of the evening will be "Celebrating Strong Women in Song". I've already had a look at the proposed set list and they've put together a wonderful and varied selection of songs ranging from the humerous to the inspirational. You can get tickets from our website, or reserve by calling us - all the details are HERE . The cost is $12.00 if purchased or reserved in advance, or $15.00 at the door. Refreshments will be available, and the venue is handicapped accessible with on-site parking.

And by the way, if you are a Mudcatter in the Richmond area and you aren't on our mailing list, please sign up!

What a perfect title for a concert featuring these two! Jacqui, can't you sweet-talk someone into making a chartered bus run down for us? LOL

Can't be done Maeve - we really can't desert our own house concert performers, otherwise I might be looking at ways to get there!

Do I hear the rumor of a tour? Can I start a rumor of a tour
of Two Strong Women singing trad songs? We'll find a time
and place for you in Ithaca, NY.

Seriously, this is one not to miss... if you're anywhere nearby.
(which, unfortunately, I'm not)

my love to both - Pamela G.

This sounds like a great night. I've heard and thoroughly enjoyed Judy's singing many times, but although I've met, chatted and drunk beer with Lisa, I don't think I've ever heard her sing live. But I had her 'American Primitive' on in the car the other night, and the singing was just terrific!

In answer to Pamela,
I'll be singing solo at the Cranberry Coffeehouse in Binghamton, NY on April 18 as well as at Sinsull's on the 25th. I'll email you.

Lovely town Richmond. The last time we were there we spent an evening in a bar/diner, close by the Mr.Bojangles statue and , would you credit it, the place was owned and run by Englishman - a Liverpool F.C. supporter.

You guys sound so friendly and welcoming, I just might pack my bundle and hit the road again.

Brian, next time you come over, lets get into a cornner and sing our brains out. I have so loved your music, guess it's time to share a little myself.

Pam, Ithaca is one of my favorite places in the world. Gotta get up there one way or the other.

Jacqui & Co., I'll be coming up to Maine around thanksgiving, as I always do with Charlie, to see my son and daughter-in-law. we could pass through to sing or just to share a cup of tea on Sunday.

CupofTea, whoevever you be, you sound like you share my favorite beverage. Maybe my taste in songs?

And all the rest of you wonderful folk? I feel the vibes and it is great. This marks my third trip outside the Washington area to do concerts in about ten years. Partly this is because DC is a macrocosm of trad music in itself, but mostly it's because I've been working on other projects and have become a lazy sot.

Thanks to Mary and Judy for cajoling this concert out of me-- I am ready to roar, again and again!

Well, they go to RICHMOND to perform together, but do they schedule a joint concert here where their friends and local fans can hear them??? Nooooooooo. Perform for their hometown buddies??? Nooooooo. They decide to take it on the road instead. Ithaca? Maine? Hmmmpppfff! Well, Ladies, we will feel snubbed and slighted if you don't remedy this situation, and SOON! (...and I can be a horrible nag!)

For all you lucky Richmond Girls (and boys), get yourselves out to this concert. It should be just wonderful! We will sit at home in Washington, D.C., and whine.

Mary'd and a-Nulled in Richmond? Ms. Smith has Cooked up something spectacular again!

Nothing is like a Null set, not to be a-voided if at all possible, and while on a Cook's Tour as well? It doesn't get much better than that! A Roar Occaision indeed, in word and in song! Alas, (two of them, actually),and alack (of a way and time for me to get down there) and a perfect couple, at that, but I'll have to miss them, because they're out of range clear down there. If they're in whatever range you're at home on, don't YOU dare miss it!

But once again Mary and the Richmond Society have scheduled a winner. Keep up the good work!

Hmmmmmmmmmm........

If there was a FSGW caravan going down.........

If not, I hope this is like a pre-Broadway tryout tour before a DC opening run.

In answer to Kath...well, not a joint concert, but I did do a concert for my CD release last year and everybody came. Lisa gave a house concert here earlier this year and everybody came.

Now if you should want a JOINT concert or songs about STRONG WOMEN (sung by STRONG WOMEN) just say the word...(You might have to sing some yourself, ya know...you have an awful lot of strong women songs yourself!)

I'm a little nervous because no one from the Richmond area (except Maryrrf) has posted to say they are coming.

On the other hand, it is WONDERFUL to see cheering posts from all you good friends. It was so good to see and hear you at the Getaway, and/or in England, and/or at Augusta, and/or all the places in between!

Cheers to you both from New Hampshire, if only I could get there without the cost of the gas. Can to stream it live, would love to hear what you both have for strong women songs & even more I'd love to hear you singing them. It was great to hear you both at the Getaway, that alone will tide me over for a good spell.

Aw shucks-- all this anticipation and bonhommie is making me giddy with expectation. If the people who do come are a zillionth as supportive as those who cant come, it shall be a great night. in any case, it's always a delight to sing with Judy... as for honorary "strong woman" Mary-- we could easily have made a trio. Mary is a wonderful singer with great songs...

Well it was a great evening of songs and many people stopped by afterwards to tell me how much they'd enjoyed Judy and Lisa. They were in fine form with a wonderful selection of songs. Memorable moments include Lisa's voice ringing out as she sang "Union Maid" and the audience joining in on the chorus "Oh you can't scare me I'm sticking to the union...", Judy's superb rendition of two Scottish ballads - Willie's Mother" and "Child Waters". Then in the second set there were some humerous songs "The Devil and the Feathery Wife",and "The Crafty Maid's Policy" by Judy, and "Six Girls" and "A rich Old Miser Courted Me" by Lisa, that had the audience giggling. For the serious songs - Lisa's "Mother Jones" was beautifully rendered, and Judy closed down the concert with one of my favorites "Daughters of the Revolution" It's a pity no 'catters were there. Something tells me that now that the program has been developed Judy and Lisa might take their show on the road - maybe you'll get to see them in your town!

I can speak for myself (and I'll bet Lisa will echo) - just say the word and we'll be there. We had such fun! Thanks to Maryff and all the folks who help run that fine series; and of course to all the folks who came. We both were thinking of other songs we "should have done."

Ditto Judy:

This was a fascinating topic to sing about and we had a great time. Mary and the others are creating a real folk community in Richmond made the evening memorable. I understand it was the first time they had had an entirely a cappella evening and the audience sang like troopers. We felt welcome and understood. Our songs found a home there.

Not only would I like to do this program elsewhere, I'd like to grow it with new songs for different circumstances. Ask us for an evening and we will jump through hoops. Honest. As long as we'er having fun.
