21 Oct 08 - 02:49 AM (#2471504) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: GUEST,Elfcall I really enjoyed the programme - and it was great to see some of the older members too - but not Derek - alas. What was the last tune they played in the programme? - where the audience were 'dancing'in the aisles. Elf |
21 Oct 08 - 03:02 AM (#2471511) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: Dave Hanson Interesting also for what was left out, how Paddy originally wanted Barney McKenna in the band and how Van Morrison had a serious fall out with Paddy [ and Derek ] for doing his utmost to poach Derek away from The Chieftains, all and much more in John Glatts official biography. eric |
21 Oct 08 - 05:58 AM (#2471574) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: Les in Chorlton A brilliant movie about a brilliant band. Any suggestions for another band about which such a movie could be made? Chiz L in C |
21 Oct 08 - 06:10 AM (#2471580) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: GUEST,Dáithí I enjoyed the programme greatly too...but would have liked a bit more about Seán Ó Riada. It was basically his cocpt to put trad musicians together ina more orchestral format that led to the emergence of the Chieftains..and indeed the whole idea of such ensemble playing. It really had not been seen before - mostly individual musicians had played separately for the most part up till then, as I understand it. D |

21 Oct 08 - 08:14 AM (#2471654) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: Compton Pure dead brilliant!!...Obviously another for "The Legends of Folk Music Channel!!. It looked like the turn was Breton or similar...and incredibly what the dancers were doing appeared more Breton than "Conga" |
21 Oct 08 - 08:24 AM (#2471666) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: GUEST,LDT I caught the documentary by accident when flikking through the channels for something to watch...read 'folk legends' and thought I'd have a look might learn something. (being new to the genre I haven't heard of a lot of artists). So it was informative for me. There always seems to be more I don't know than know. |

21 Oct 08 - 09:58 AM (#2471752) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: Paul Burke I read thge John Glatt book a few years ago. I thought the first half of the book was brilliant; the struggles, inspirations and tribulations of a band of brilliant young musicians doing something entirely new. But later part of the book became a rather tedious name- dropping catalogue of all the celebs they met when they became famous. |

23 Oct 08 - 08:14 AM (#2473612) Subject: RE: The Chieftains on BBC2 From: Dazbo The "conga" line in the audience at the end looked like an approximation of an An Dro or Hanter Dro and the music sounded more Breton than Irish to my ears. Interesting also how the original and replacement bodhran players held the drum - left hand not inside damping the skin but holding the rim. |
